It’s the underdog thing- as a club, we’ve never been at the top table, other a brief spell in 88, but that doesn’t matter. Our nickname, The Lions, comes from early football history- upsetting the apple cart in the FA Cup. Our motto, we fear no foe. Even no one likes us, we don’t care. All of these come from the spirit of the fans and what we expect from the team.
As fans, most of us support the club because of generations of family. The area has always required a mental, if not physical toughness. Equally, a generous nature in terms of looking after your own and others that deserve it- for my mum’s generation growing up, extended family lived less than ten miles to one another.. Often you will see reference to Millwall being a family (take KJ’s book for an example). I think the only reason we are a special club is because of the fans, our mentality of not giving a shit unless it really matters. I also think the club now embraces that a lot better than it used to (despite the surveillance in the ground now).
