Millwall in the eighties- your memories

Yep Lovell, Steve Lowndes and an OG before they grabbed a late consolation.
There was lots of high scoring games that season. 5-0 nil win V Hull, a few 3-2's, a 6-1 defeat away at Norwich, a 5-1, we beat them 4-2 at the den earlier in the season, a 5-1 defeat away to Grimsby and a 3-3 at the spotters after we led 3-0.

The giant killings in the cups. Beating West Brom at home 3-0 in the 1st leg of a League Cup tie when they were one of the top sides in the country. Fashanu destroying Chelsea in 85 at Stamford Bridge, then Lineker bottling it with Leicester at the Den.

Staying up on the last day of the season at Chesterfield in 83, which was the platform built by George Graham to gain top flight football up at Hull in 88.

As a fan, being able to walk right around the ground and change ends during the game, the peanut man, be able to have a beer on the terrace. Being able to sing anything you wanted without the fear of getting nicked.
Second leg at WBA result wise wasn't too clever but a bit of fun was had in or on the seats.

Birmingham at the den 86, everyone in the fox when a few wall burst in saying the zulus have slipped the escort and are on the prowl, everyone empties out the fox and over the road towards the school on the corner of cold blow lane with an helicopter hovering above the turnstiles, as we appear they are up against the turnstiles wrapped up with a massive police presence, couple of wall get amongst them and call it on for Covent Garden after the game, how Millwall got up there undetected I’ll never know meeting in the nags head on the corner of floral street, shout go’s up that their here and everyone leaves in a big mob and end up scattering about twenty bods in Garrick street who had nothing to do with football but up there on the piss, old bill arrive and game over, think the early morning knocks followed a few weeks after.

Millwall in the 80's created a way of life for me, when i think of it now, completely entwined, one, made the other. The Crown and Anchor, The Fox, The Old Kent Road,.........one night after we came beck from Southampton i think, Arsenal were in the Frog giving it large. A small group of kids (we were only kids ourselves but they were younger than us )came out as we were passing and told us that they were terrorising all inside. We waited until they came out and chased them all over and give it to them :):):)
getting a coach to Coventry from the Tyrell, and making the coach driver drive through a market as he didnt know the way :)
The coaches from the Lizzie.
Meeting and becoming friends with people i hade never met before, Charlie, Podge, Lenny, T B and H...............The O K R was buzzing every weekend after football.
The other pubs, Kellys, The Kings on the rye, Cheeks, The Lyceum, the pub at the bottom of Blackheath (That Greg owned, name escapes me know.) That club in Herne Hill, opposite Brockwell Park, ................ Had a big row with Chelsea there one night, we were massively outnumbered, but didnt fold and gave it to them.....the next week........... What a Millwall turn out, they fecking shite themselves :)...........................
the specials, (not the group) Rashers, Farah's Le Pel, Swan lager, (the black ones were stronger) The music

It really was a way of life. every monday planning for the away games. Wages were really poor then, but we did it all, for so many years. Clothes, music, spills, wicked people, the old den, the peanut seller, crowds of 3'000 at times. I just loved it all. Unless one was there, it is just too hard to describe without sounding like a pussy. Samsons, Gillys the Apples and Pears, the Windsor, that one in Tower Bridge. Everywhere in our area was Millwall, no grey areas. Definatley no other shirts
It was all Millwall related, and of the 80's.

This is before i recall the games.......... But to me, it was a time, and the best time i have had with the lions. As stated, bigger results and games in the new den. But the 80's.................. absolutely loved, loved, loved it ..........

Oct 83 v Burnley. Millwall win 2-0. My first ever game. To be honest I wasn’t a Wall fan at the time, more of a football fanatic, so I was more excited with the Burnley squad, which had Gerry Gow and a Brian Flynn whom I remebered from the home internationals. Bryan Hamilton who the summer previously was scoring the winning goal v Spain in the World Cup.

However, from then on it was Millwall only.

Remember the cup games v Leicester, Chelsea and Luton. Fashanu and Lovell. my first away game v Reading in Doc’s first season.

Michael’s Marks scoring a hat trick before Teddy.

The league cup game at QPR, when Jim Smith compared our support to a horde of Zulu’s . The Simon cup game at West Ham.

Away to Birmingham in our league winning season, losing 0-1, coming away from that game, winning the league was furthest from our minds but was the start of our incredible run.

Away at Liverpool and OT, playing arsenal off the pitch at Highbury and Briley’s goal being ruled out for a phantom’s offside by Teddy.

Sing Terry’s gonna get cha.

Great, great, great days

Forgot to add the Leeds away game in our promotion season. My cousin was waiting in his car in Catford when 2 blokes came up to him and asked if he was going to game and could they get a lift. Never met them before or since but what a night.

The Albert I think and Bon Boni

My Dad took me to see us play Forest in the top flight, first ever match at the grand old age of 8. Loved the singing, swearing (although was told not to tell mum anything!). The noise when we equalised was unreal. Millwall for life from that point onwards.

I remember the floodlights going out in a cup game - can't remember who we played but they had a big bloke/cunt wearing a headband if that helps?

I'm still gutted about Fleck's goal. Up to then, I thought we were going to win the league. No idea how we ended up 10th to this day.

And on the roof of the stand that night
Mad fkers

Yeah nice one Peckham starting this, will get back to it in a bit, want to read through as well

Oh just another quick one

Ilderton Wanderer

Leeds at home November 85. Buzz going round for weeks before. There wasn’t even 10K in The Den but the atmosphere was utterly evil, pretty sure we took the lead with a Stevie Lovell penalty before going on to win 3-1 in front of a lawless Den. I really miss going football when it was like that.

Yeah this was the one Granville was in goal for us wasnt it

Man alive outside the ground Ilderton road Leeds fans got a awful battering that day, there seemed to be lots that i dont think even went to the game come out of that Tustin Estate , That Grassy area infront ended up a little muddy after some "Antics"
I think this was where all the hate crept in a bit with Leeds , mainly with their lot as well , well i think so

There was also something went on that day that unless you was in that area , the half way which i was you might have missed it or not heard about it
But it happened i can assure you

Anyway just going forward a little a bit in time from this but same incident
As you all know you get some right characters down there and as im passing at a game outside cbl get aimed at me "Here he knows a bit dont ya " Me "well i dont know about that but go on"(hada little feeling what it might be about)
Did you hear that cunt Phelan (Terry ) on tv saying we were the worst fans we had ever faced and our mental we are, and Yes the R was mentioned,
Yes i did see the programme and it was based a bit on the Racist thing , think Barnes was on it as well, Tbf it was not all Millwall

Anyway , sorry this going on a bit ha, The boys and Seniors "The lying cunt his never even played at the Den"

Now thats where i had to give a different angle on it . Me "well actually he has he played for Leeds when he was on loan to them when we played em"

I tried to get back onside as got a few looks "Yeah horrible little runty left back, all one foot" ha
Remember this was Pre net , Pre phones
Maybe cos i was on that side and him being left back near the fence i noticed him more,

Fence ! think you man know whats coming , his taking a throw, shower of coins come down on him and can hear the clanking and chings as the fence behind him gets the full force

Few Minutes later another throw "BANG" real ker clang not a small ching
Just at that minute see a Wooden Board come flying over and hits the fence and rebounds back into the crowd just missing them !
Phelan turns around not knowing whats going on , dont think he took another throw after that

I think their was a little building going on at the top of the stand, roof being repaired and some bits and pieces were hanging about, well obviously nobody's going to walk in are they with a plank of wood under their arm about 8 ft long through the turnstiles

One of them incidents that look bad even a long distance away but when your up close
So i know you got lots of lies but on this one he did play at the Den so he probably was a bit miffed, hence the comments

Yeah one of the many stranger incidents at the old Den
Jim Cumbes the west Brom Keeper knocked out by a piece of coal at the cbl end walking off the pitch after the game i see that

A Linesman getting a Man hole cover across his Nut ! Never saw that

Maybe one of the strangest ones what about ha , sorry giggling slightly as i put this down How about the Human Missile V Brighton ? Sprung from the seats , season after the Play off disaster
Ended with all the players fighting, right up near the way end

If you want Lies and things that never happened
Later got to pop out
How about "The Lawrie Cunningham Story" ???

Anyone ?
Dont try looking for it on You Tube , me and a few other might be to blame for it not being on there and was taken down
The plot thickens

Just so much happend in the decade including my first nick , getting off with tha landlords daughter of a pub in Norwich in front of him really thought I was untouchable in the 80s done and did what I wanted so many good memories my worst was being chucked out of our first ever top flight home game v derby when it was 0-0 when I eventually got back in it was 1-0 so missing that goal still hurts

We had it later with them in Covent Garden, punch and Judy, lot of Peckham bods/ turks etc in our lot. Was hours after the game.
