Millwall in the eighties- your memories

What started out in the third division under George Petchey in 1980 in front of average crowds of 4,495 and finished in relegation from the top tier in 89 in front of an average crowd of 12,427, Bar the first few seasons of this decade it really was a great time to be alive and going to Millwall. From decent cup runs, to promotion, to watching a future England striker and european cup winner banging in the goals for wall.

Add your memories,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

The eighties , a rollercoaster of a decade if ever there was one.
Petchey era football awful, but always had humour on the terraces , mainly cos you could hear what everyone in the ground was saying.
George Graham era always eventful on and off the pitch. Very fond memories.
The Doc era fuckin outrageous can’t remember too much of it to be fair.:):guiness::smoke:

The giant killings in the cups. Beating West Brom at home 3-0 in the 1st leg of a League Cup tie when they were one of the top sides in the country. Fashanu destroying Chelsea in 85 at Stamford Bridge, then Lineker bottling it with Leicester at the Den.

Staying up on the last day of the season at Chesterfield in 83, which was the platform built by George Graham to gain top flight football up at Hull in 88.

As a fan, being able to walk right around the ground and change ends during the game, the peanut man, be able to have a beer on the terrace. Being able to sing anything you wanted without the fear of getting nicked.

Seeing us top of the league after beating Qpr 3-2 was quite surreal when you think that we was watching them in the fourth division ten year earlier. We went eight games into the season before we actually lost a game- was to Middlesboro- 4-2 away. Our first home loss was to those tramps across the water- came in the shape of a 1-0 defeat in December. Next home defeat was that memorable slugging match v Norwich. Came from 2-0 down to draw level the that pain in the arse Robert Fleck grabbed them the winner on the 90th minute.

We beat Derby home and away

That game v Narrrrrrrrggggggggee

The season fizzled out from march onwards. Last win was a 2-0 home victory over Villa with O'Callaghan and Hurlock scoring the goals. The remaining 10 games were a mixture of 4 draws and 6 defeats. We finished tenth, the lowest we'd been in the division all season. We were third when we won our last game v Villa in mid March.

The best decade to follow the club, in every way. Although we have had a cup final and lots of big games since, back then was what we were really all about, not huge numbers going away, until we reached the top flight, highs and lows on the pitch (as always) and no idiots following us around the country, they wouldn;t have been tolerated. Nostalgia is a beautiful thing,

A formidable home record only surpassed by the bin dippers who drew very little at home, 3 in total and one of those being us in a game which we took the lead. Finished 1-1. Same season saw the Vermin relegated which was nice :hehe: They beat us home and away and still got relegated :clap:

And thats me standing to the left of the goal.

So many landmark fixtures and events in my life during this period, got nicked for d & d on the M1 on the way back from Derby NYE after we won 0-1 Teddy’s header going under Shilton.

First defeat away to boro , went up in a hire car with Fry’s of Lewisham plastered all over the back window. Fuckin huge error , was so stoned didn’t even realise.

Missed early goals at Villa Park due to archer coach being late. Should have learnt our lesson after the same fuckin coach broke down on the way back from Hull .

Queuing outside to get into Anfield when geordie scored the fuckin noise wall made was spine chilling.

Fallin over paralytic in the cbl when we beat linekers mob in the cup, my maté running two Chelsea over outside Stamford Bridge the night Fashanu terrorised Colin Pates and Doug Rougvie. Speedies penalty miss.
Luton………

I could go on for hours and probably will but don’t want to bore you all. As said one memory rolls into another.

great thread Peckham
Thankyou mate. Needed to be done cause it was a wonderful time to follow us, more so cause we;d have been in out late teens, early twenties for most of us on here bar a few senior Lions that had suffered somewhat in the 70's and witnessing two relegations. The second half of eighties was a real relief and pleasure compared to previous years. Getting in George Graham was a masterstroke by the board. He pretty much laid the foundations for us and the Doc to move onto another level.
