A decent first half but undone by two goals in 90 seconds from them.

We started well. Every body was on the front foot and closing down well. Some good movement from Esse and Oba and we definitely had them rattled. A good long throw from Tango nod on from Wes and Honeyman hit a close range shot which hit their keeper and bounced clear. Another good effort fromDanny to Oba, shot on the turn was saved. After a corner Coops was making his way back when a good ball found him, he nooded it on the Flem and the cut back cross was met by Esse in their box and he stroked it home for 1-0. It was no more than we deserved. A few minutes later Honeyman passed toDanny who pulled it back to Oba but his shot was saved. In the meanwhile Shark made a couple of decent saves. From one it bounced the post to Danny, off the post again and was cleared. We continued to press and a poor clearance from them fell to Joe but his shot was wide. And the half ended with our noses in front.

I was fairly sure that Oba would be replaced by Tom but we were unchanged after the break. It was no surprise that would come at us after the break and that was the case. We had to stay strong but they came at us and we were under pressure. They made two attacking subs after 55 and came at us even stronger. We threatened a little from a corner but Oba shot over. Now it was out turn for fresh legs. Tom and Watmore came on and Esse and Oba departed . Then came the turning point. A decent ball into our box was just in front of Tango. He stretched to claim it but just took their man out and the ref pointed to the spot. The strike was straight down the middle and Shark stood no chance and so it was 1-1. They had their tails up and an extra spring in their step and a break through the middle saw O’Hare run through, lay it off to their CF who hit a firm shot to Shark’s near post and it was 2-1. More fresh legs as Flem and Honeyman were replaced by Sav and Mayor but as hard as we tried we just couldn’t get an equaliser.
Shark made some excellent stops in the first half and was a little caught out for their winner. Danny was solid and Tango, Wes and Coops played well. Joe looked lively on the left. Esse had a decent game and took his goal well, Honeyman was busy and Flem hit a decent cross for the 🥅.Casper was also busy and Oba had a better, more involved game. Watmore had a couple of moments but not really a threat.Tom was similar, Mayor hardly broke sweat and Sav was his normal busy self.
We deserved a point but it was certainly a better performance than up at Hull. We move on the Tractor Boys at the Den on Wednesday.

Christ how bad must we have been at hull if that was better? We had about 20 mins of possession and that was it today. Could barely string three passes together for most of that game.

It comes down to the same thing time after time in that we go in 1 up, have played the high press well, have reduced the oppo’s chances in the 1st half (just as we did today), yet can’t start the 2nd half with the same game plan.

Do the players just switch off during the half time team talk? Does Edwards tell them not to press 2nd half? They’ve all played enough games to know that an opposition team losing at HT (and especially at home) are gonna have to show their manager and their supporters that they will come out for the 2nd half and make a go of it (and in Coventry’s case today know that a win would put them back in the play off spaces), so why can’t our players be up for it as well? Chances are it’ll be the same team which starts the 2nd half that finished the 1st, so what changes in the players psyche during that 15 minute break?

The players know the league position they’re in. They know what it means for the club and the supporters to stay another season in the Championship (and for themselves as well), so what’s stopping them from giving it a bloody good go?

It's poor. Defenders can't defend. Midfielders are not creative and the attackers can't attack.
Keep thinking this team will start showing improvement but it seems to keep getting worse.
Going to be hard fought to the end of the season. Still think we have enough to stay up. Just need to find setup.

They stopped pressing after 25 minutes. No confidence again after that as per usual. I think that’s down to the players and not JE.

I would like to think Edwards is a good enough coach to spot when his team’s high press was dropping off, and inform the players of that, either during the 1st half or at least during HT (so something can be done about it.) If he is doing that then either the players aren’t listening to him or they don’t have the fitness levels and/or the belief in themselves to change it when Edwards sees it.

Either way it’s very concerning that this is happening.

No team can play a high press for 90 minutes. We need to see the game out, slow the game and win those 50 / 50 balls.
I phrased my previous post badly.

You're right, no team plays a press (high or otherwise) for 90 minutes, but we don't appear to be able to press at any point after the hour mark. In addition, the longer a game goes on the more we lose our defensive shape. Last 5-10 minutes a team might throw caution to the wind if chasing a game but, if pressing is meant to be part of the strategy, I can't think of any reason other than a lack of fitness why it should seemingly disappear after 60 mins.

Anyone else notice we sent the Cavalry on in 66th minute?
Then in the 77th minute, in true military fashion and following on behind, they were joined later by 'A Major'.

Not sure that we'd have been any different under Rowett. The rot set in for Rowett last March or so and we lost leads under him too.

This is very true. Our form at the end of last season was dire. However, he was still able to get a performance like Plymouth away in the dying days of his tenure. What we would give for one of those?
