Just back Middlesbrough

A fantastic performance which kicked off the season perfectly. We started on the front foot and took the game to Boro and really should have took the lead early on when a flowing move ended with Flemming firing narrowly wide. The expected Middlesbrough onslaught never materialised and it wasn’t long before another chance fell the way of Flemming after a smart corner routine but he spooned his shot over. Not long after it was Joe Bryans turn after some determined attacking play his deflected shot which looked for a brief moment to be heading in only to clear the crossbar.

Heading towards half time we looked to be in control and a half chance fell to Nisbet who just couldn’t get the final touch. There was however a warning when Boro managed to get the ball in the net but the Lino had already flagged for the ball going out of play. So at half time we were were pleased with the performance but slightly disappointed not to be leading.

The second half began in similar fashion when the industrious Watmore played a perfectly timed ball into Nisbet who with only the keeper to beat could only steer his shot straight at the onrushing Dieng. A big chance had gone begging. Boro started to come more into the game with Forss using his favoured tactic of cutting inside and trying to shoot inside the near post, one effort drew a smart stop from Sarkic who got down well.

Then Rowett played his ace, Emakhu and Esse came on for Flemming and the tiring Watmore. Minutes later it paid dividends in spectacular fashion, a ball looped out wide from the hard working Mitchell left Emakhu with a lot to do but with a searing burst of pace he beat his man to the ball and took off towards goal. He looked up and crossed low to Esse but the ball seemed slightly behind the youngster, it didn’t matter as Esse adjusted his position and fired a bullet of a shot into the top corner. The away support of just under a thousand went bananas, it was no more than we deserved.

The rest of the game played out with Boro doing their best to lay siege to the Millwall goal but in truth despite a flurry of corners never managed to carve out a clear chance. After six minutes added time the ref blew up for a deserved three points on the road.

The spotlight was obviously on the new signings and it was Casper De Noore who really impressed with some snappy tackling and intelligent passing. Joe Bryan was busy and pushed forward at every opportunity while Sarkic looked confident and comfortable between the sticks. Nisbet was hard working and played his part but was left rueing missing at least one really good chance, The encouraging thing was that he was getting in those good positions, with a little bit of luck the goals will surely follow.

All in all a fantastic opening day win and one we can take a lot of confidence from going into next weeks game with Bristol City.

Come on you fucking Lions!!

Amazed, thought we might be in for a rude awakening, surprised they didnt play the striker who got all the goals last season , Akprom? But a great result, and good use of the squad. Got to think this is as good as a 20 players we have had in a long while. with Bradshaw are thoughts he will play but not every minute of every game? Lots of possibilities for GR now, roll on Tuesday!

Akpom is injured, along with a few others.

On the highlights they said Akpoms absence was something to do with his contract situation but didn't elaborate. Either way, good that he wasn't on the pitch.

Appreciate the report Ilderton even though I watched the game online. 👍 Nisbet will get better as he really should have chipped that chance over the keeper as Bradders would have done.

Yes mate I think he will ok when he sharpens up a little bit. It looked to me that he learnt the difference between the Scottish league and the top end of the championship yesterday, in Scotland he probably would have bagged a couple of goals in that game.

We’ve seen Bradshaw miss a few chances like that before and go on to score goals so hopefully Nisbet will follow. I’ve seen enough to know that he has that ability to be in the right place at the right time and with the attacking options we seem to have now he should have no problem reaching double figures this season.

Think Rowett needs to be persistent in playing Rab and Watmore up front together, so as to allow them both to get on each other’s wavelength!

There was a moment yesterday where Watmore, having done the hard part of getting through the Boro defence, took on a shot when Rab, who must have thought he’d avoided being offside, was already in the penalty box, and was waiting for Watmore to make the killer pass to him which he would have ran onto!

You could see, after Watmore had fired off his shot, how frustrated Rab must have felt, because he instantly threw his head back whilst holding both arms forward in front of him, as if to silently say, “I needed the ball here!”

Its good that forwards always want to be greedy and score goals, but sometimes, and it was the case with Watmore a couple of times yesterday, he steams forward like a juggernaut, head down, and if he had only looked up, he could have seen a team mate in a better position to pass to!

The flip side to that is, his pace and determination to get forward is going to terrorise opposition defences this season, but hopefully Rowett will get him to see how best to utilise his talents in the best way to help the team and himself!

Thanks mate for an excellent report on the game , really did fancy this game but had a mates stag to go to this evening. Wish I’d gone to the game now 😊

Subs that came on were all excellent. Seville was particularly a force, and Lenny’s run at the end relieved pressure and let tin run out. Best game I’ve seen them play in a long time. Hope it’s an omen of things to come.
That has been our problem for a while, stringing together really decent performances, instead of every 5 or 6 games.
Hopefully this season will be different, with a quality squad, maybe one or two more to come in 🤞. Yesterday was very encouraging to say the least positive, controlled, energetic and a superb win at a place where we normally struggle
Long may it continue. COYL

Whatmore for the time he was on was fantastic. Linked up play , turned and ran through the middle and was basically untouchable. He might of wasted 1 pass. Great player.

That was a fantastic performance. On paper one of the hardest opening games you could ask for and we stood up to the challenge.

I thought we looked a level above last year simply for how well we moved the ball forward in transition. Passes were crisp, in to feet, and Nisbet’s ability to hold the ball up and lay off with quality will really be an asset.

Yea he missed three great chances, but the goals will come I’m sure of it.

Hard to fault anyone. Bryan stood out for me, will only get better as he gets fitter as well which is exciting. Emakhu and Esse are fantastic options to have off the bench.

Bring on Brizzle!!

We’ve not had someone who can run right at a defender and get them back pedalling. We’ve missed it, particularly away from home. I thought he was great - only slight criticism is at times he could get his head up and play the killer ball rather than run in to trouble!

Their keeper would not have walked the ball so far out of his area yesterday if Bradshaw had been on the pitch, Nisbett will learn a lot about defending from the front when he plays with Bradshaw.

He also had his down when substituted and walked off to the Boro dugout. Fucking funny. 😆
