Agree....I was there too. Turing for the duration was a total mare. Me and a few mates stayed in the centre and were near as damn it under house arrest in the local hotel for sake of safety. After the game against italy we couldn't wait to get down the Naples for the last group game v Spain for a bit of sanity....experiences....

First game against Belgium at Juve/Torino's ground all kicked off with some Juve and plod, England filled their end, 10,000 maybe, was the game we got gassed. Next game same ground was against Italy. England support melted, reckon only 2,000 England showed. Tricky night, the Ities were blade happy.
Few hundred English had it with the italians in Turin square after the game, good ruck went on for a while and the English did ok. Mainly northern mobs, and decent sized mob of west ham. special mention to the Darlo lads i met out there. Mad as a box of frogs; respect.
Last game was down in Naples, pretty sure it was the Dutch we played not Spain. By this time we was out of the competition, memories right reckon only 500 or so English went down to Napoli. Plenty of fun and the English bods that made the effort did ok.
Followed England away for about six years, didn't come close to the buzz of following Wall, the novelty wore off, too many west ham maybe. Something not right standing with that lot.

Agreed was lively in turin. It was definately Spain in last group game 3-2. We travelled independently and saw it as our summer hols. The afters in turin after Italy was somewhat hairy. We were lucky in that we were seated away from our main group and were with Italian families and had a ball....just needed to be very careful when leaving....police escort to the gates then they stopped there, laughed at as and said off you go. The final in Rome was merely an event but has tickets so spent 3 days in Rome and went regardless of England on way home

Your right Lionman, just googled it. Was Spain in the game in Naples. That's over 40 years ago, whenever conversation in pub has come up about years gone by and I start rabbiting about Italy 1980 I've always said Belgium, Italy in Turin and Holland in Naples. Fuck knows why I thought it was Holland.

For some reason, The Gonk doesn't really fancy him to start a game and never has done. He's always been an (expensive) super sub in Gonkgate's tactical mind.
