Should be number one on the list to succeed GR if he goes or is pushed. KN is working miracles with U23’s with Robbo alongside him. A decent centre forward in his day who scored goals for all his clubs. A London based manager be it north of the Thames would IMO be best suited to keep continuity between the academy and first team. Would he want it who knows, but I would rather us keep it in the family than to go out to market. Unlike every other coach in GR’s setup who are all ex defenders, Nugent is the only ex forward in our entire coaching staff team and that surely speaks volumes as to why our U23’s have much higher scoring stats whilst defensively being astute. Their achievements last season speaks for itself and the way they have started this campaign minus key players who have been loaned out, means he knows how to setup them up and play with freedom and on the front foot. His achievements are not going unnoticed by other clubs and therefore the club would be crazy not to promote from within if the situation arises.

But didn’t do so well at Barnet. Being in the hot seat is different gravy.

Handling up and coming youngsters without the intense pressure is a bit different to managing the egos of big time charlies and wage thieves (not that we have had too many of those in recent times) and the board and fans expectations. At some point (if he fancies it) he may want to move into being an assistant manager or coach of the first team. At the moment he may be happy strengthening the club with a decent batch of youngsters every year who can step up and make it with Wall. I’m sure the club will do what’s right for him but he needs to mentor a successor before he steps up.
