John Motson

Bloody hell, I'd have sworn it was Tony Gubba commentating that night
Gubba about 1973 at Southampton. I was with Man U under the stand with my younger brother. We were well outnumbered and it was coming on top, loads of bottles flying, but good ruck. Got separated from my brother. Found him and he was in tears. My old man was a journo at the game so I took my brother up to the press room. Said it was proper going off and they were selling beer in bottles. Gubba goes, 'So they were selling empty bottles?'😂

Years later he said of that night at Kenilworth Road that he had really feared for his life that evening and it was the most frightened he had ever been.

Great character and knew his stuff. Thanks for ther memories.

RIP

Yes, a character. If you have five minutes spare give this highlights game a butchers.

I initially landed on the page because of a John Motson reference and the link.
It's France vs Portugal in 1984. International Football at it's best. Skilful, pacey, forward attacking play, with no tippy tappy backwards and sideways fucking around. Top notch goal keeping as well.
