I think the internet is partly responsible for many people being incredibly thick. It all stems from the apparent belief that some people have that information provided online, from Wikipedia or otherwise, has some kind of credibility.
If someone wrote on a wall with marker pen, say, that Ford Focuses have an inherent gearbox problem everyone would ignore it; put it on Facebook and suddenly it becomes fact.
Anyone who has any kind of belief can find evidence to back it up on the internet, regardless of the validity of that belief.
