Midfielder Martyn Woolford has said he can’t wait for 2014-15 to kick off properly, and he says he’s not alone.
Speaking to the official site the 28 year old said that the entire group were ‘itching’ to get going against Leeds United at The Den on Saturday August 9 now having been back in training for a few weeks.
Of course Woolford netted in the corresponding fixture last season, and he wants to do the same again.
‘I’m buzzing for the game. There’s an extra incentive for me because most of my mates are Leeds fans so it’s always nice to get one over on them. It’s good to get a break over the summer but by the time you get back to pre season you’re raring to go again and this year has been no different. All of the lads can’t wait for the season to start against Leeds.’
Finishing as runner up to goalkeeper David Forde in the Club’s Player of the Year away, Woolford has a good 2013-14 campaign, scoring nine goals for us from the middle of the park, and he says that he’s looking forward to kicking on even further now.
‘I’m more determined than ever. As a player I’m always looking to improve and that doesn’t change just because I’ve had a good season the previous year. I never think things will be the same again so that’s why I went away and worked hard before we came back, and that’s why I’m trying my hardest every day in training. Hopefully I can recreate my form if not better it.’
With the Real Mallorca friendly remaining, Woolford admits that at this time last year against Spanish opposition we got the run around a little bit, but he feels that experience will help us manage this game better and make better decisions when it comes to keeping our shape and structure and then breaking sensibly and at the right time to cause problems in their side of the pitch. Equally he feels we will be better placed to know when to let them have the ball because they won’t do much with it.
