It was being reported yesterday that Millwall had gone back to Reading with a second offer for defender Jake Cooper.
The 22 year old spent the second half of last season out on loan with us, helping us into the Championship via the Play Off route, making 16 starting appearances with a further two from the bench.
He also returned two goals in games against Coventry City and Port Vale.
London News Online reported yesterday that having been knocked back on a first offer, Millwall have returned with a second bid for the player.
He only has one year left on his deal at Reading and the paper report that both bids were in the region of £500,000 and they had manager Neil Harris quoted as saying.
‘With Coops we have made two financial bids since the close season started. We are still in talks with Reading at the moment to try and secure Jake. He`s a player we highly admire and would like to get in but as with every young player with ability it is hard to prise him away from his current club. We`re very respectful of the fact he is Reading player.’
He went on to add.
‘We need to strengthen the centre-half area. Things are just starting to slowly happen as people return from holidays. While we`d really like to get Jake we have to keep half an eye on other centre-halves who might be signing at other places.’
Speaking more widely about strengthening the squad with reports of our interest in Southend United’s Ryan Leonard, Harris added.
‘We want to improve the squad and we want to bring in players in various positions. Centre-midfield is a position I`d like to strengthen. We have identified targets through the course of the season and the summer. The chairman is prepared to go out and try and get players that we`ve targeted. Things are ongoing in all positions at the moment – including central midfield.’
