Poul Hubertz’ first season at The Den has been an exciting one for the Danish striker, from being labeled a ‘super-sub’ to scoring 10 goals, Hoobz has become a bit of a cult figure at The Den.

Before jetting off on his summer break, the Dane told millwallfc.co.ukthat he had concerns when he first joined the club: ‘The first three months were pretty much the worst of my career,’ said Hubertz.

‘I was on the bench most of the time, I couldn’t really score many goals, we couldn’t win and I missed my family. My girlfriend and kids were back home in Denmark and I was on my own nearly every day in the hotel. ‘

The strikers first goal for the club proved to be an important one as it gave the Lions their first three points of the season, but it was also an important one for the man who scored it: ‘My first goal against Oldham was very special to me and helped because after that match I tried to speak more to the other players, a few weeks after my family came over and everything started to go the right way.’

‘After Christmas it all got so much better; we were winning pretty much all the time at home and got some very good wins away.’

Hoobz became a bit of a cult figure at The Den last season, kissing the Millwall badge every time he hit the back of the net and Poul said that he felt a connection with the fans straight away: ‘It is always nice to score goals, especially in front of the fans here. Because they are right behind the goal it is good to share the celebrations with them.

‘Luckily I scored 10 goals this season, so 10 times I have managed to share those celebrations with the supporters!’

I really liked Hubertz when I watched him play. A good old fashioned striker who fitted in nicely with the Football League’s ‘long ball’ tactic but when Spackman was boss, he wanted to play like the Brazilians do and that`s why he ultimately failed.

When Willie came in he gave a few of the lads a reality check and the football became more direct and this suited Hoobz. Donachie’s only problem with Hubertz was his fitness – could he last a whole 90 minutes? Well I don’t think we ever found out, but if he can prove to the management that he can last the whole match then I think we will see the best of Hubertz.

A few more goals could go a long way next season…
