Willie Donachie suffered his first defeat as Millwall crashed to a 2-0 defeat at Swansea on Sunday.

Lions caretaker boss Donachie had overseen three wins and a draw since Nigel Spackman’s sacking.

But a first half strike from Dennis Lawrence and a Leon Britton goal after the break sealed a comfortable win for Swansea, who also missed a late penalty.

Millwall remain in the relegation zone after a defeat that underlined how fragile the recent revival has been.

It could all have been so different if Danny Haynes, playing his last match before returning to Ipswich, had volleyed a couple of inches lower instead of striking the crossbar in the opening minutes.

Swansea also struck the woodwork when Lee Trundle directed a header onto the bar in the 16th minute.

The Welsh side were ahead just a minute later when Trinidad and Tobago defender Lawrence nodded home after Lions goalkeeper Lenny Pidgeley was unable to cleanly catch a corner.

Swansea remained on top until half-time and it took just seven minutes of the second half before they extended their lead.

Trundle combined well with strike partner Rory Fallon, whose pass picked out Britton in space and he drilled his shot past Pidgeley.

Pidgeley at least kept the score down when he turned away Trundle’s penalty after the skilful striker was fouled by Maurice Ross.

Marvin Elliott and substitute Chris Zebroski forced saved from former Lions goalkeeper Willy Gueret in the closing stages but the home side held on for a convincing win.

Teams:

Gueret; Tate, Iriekpen, Lawrence, Williams; Pratley, Britton, Tudur Jones, Robinson (Butler 83); Trundle (Jones 89), Fallon (Akinfenwa 87).
