Mahlon Romeo and new signing David Worrall have both been speaking ahead of the League One opener this weekend against Oldham Athletic.
Beginning with Romeo, the young full back told the official site that he had put the disappointment of missing out on our Play Off campaign last season (suspension) behind him, and he was looking forward to hopefully going one stage further this year.
‘It was a gutting feeling to not be in the team. But at least I was still around them, still training and went on the day with them. It is definitely something I will use if I ever get in a tough situation.’
With a good first year under his belt following his breakthrough, Romeo went on to say that he was just looking to build on his progress last year now and develop further as a player – hopefully with success for the club.
‘Automatic promotion is our goal this season. And for myself, it is to stay in the team. I’m looking forward to the start of the season, we all are. Myself and the team are feeling strong. We’ve had a good pre-season, a good four weeks and are ready to go. As a group I think we all gel really well, the new boys, everyone is really together. The balance between the older players and some of the younger ones is good, and so is the chemistry. It’s going to be an exciting division with some different teams this season. We are all looking forward to it.’
As for Worrall, with his arrival at the club over the summer, he was also looking forward to seeing the proper games return and he also spoke about settling in with his new colleagues.
‘I have been very impressed with the set-up here at Millwall. It is very different from every other club I’ve been at. Everything is done right and preparation is meticulous, even for friendly matches. There is also a real emphasis on hard work. I don’t think I’ve done as much running in my life, but the way the gaffer wants us to play involves getting our shape back immediately when we lose possession. We watched a few videos at the start so the manager could show us what he expected of us, and it is vital that everyone buys into it. We have a very strong squad here with a mix of older pro’s and talented youngsters who the gaffer keeps on top of. I’m really looking forward to the season. We’ll be going out to win every game and although we’ll have set-backs I’m sure, I’m very confident we’ll have a good one.’
As for the season opener against Oldham more specifically, he added.
‘I’m pleased to be facing Oldham first up. Hopefully I’ll be playing and can score a goal, as I did against them last season. There have been big changes there recently so I don’t know too many of their players now. For us it’s all about getting off to a good start, hopefully with a win.’
