Manager Ian Holloway has said he remains confident that we will avoid the drop following our draw in the derby today against Charlton.
In what Ollie admits was a very nervy affair, he does feel we had the greater and better chances in the game but he knows we ultimately didn’t do enough to break down a ‘stubborn’ Charlton defence, and one thing he has taken from the game is the fact that we definitely need to improve quality at set pieces because we should be scoring a lot more from them and that’s something that will be worked on in training this week.
Speaking to the official site following the score less draw, the gaffer explained that he could again take a lot of positives from the match, and plenty that we can learn from and improve upon but he remains confident we will avoid the drop but we are definitely getting to the point where it’s time to stop saying that and instead prove it with results.
‘We have got to lock things down better, if they win the ball then we need to pick it up and go again, keep up the pressure on their goal. We will be doing days and days on it because we’re just not scoring from set pieces and they make up a large percentage of goals scored.’
New signing Maierhofer had a perfect chance to open the scoring from a few yards on a set piece, but hopefully if he continues to get in the right areas as he gets sharper he’ll star burying those chances with his eyes closed.
A big positive however for the gaffer was the fact that we kept another clean sheet and he doesn’t feel we were threatened defensively so he’s delighted with that as it is a huge improvement that we have made, but it’s only a start really, points help and clean sheets obviously cause them, but now we need to click at the other end and get those elusive wins.
Again though, he feels the togetherness of the squad and the unity they have means it will only be a matter of time, because with us improving at the back that breeds confidence and means forward players will gamble more and not sit back as much because they will have greater belief in us keeping it tight at the back and that can only help us break our lack of a scoring habit.
‘We wanted six points out of this week and we’ve got four, which is disappointing. But this was always going to be a challenge and I’m loving it. I can’t tell you how much the support from the fans means, I am desperate for us to succeed.’
17 year old Fred Onyedinma was also handed his starting debut in the game, and Ollie felt he had a ‘great game’ and was ‘terrific’ in his efforts for us, so he’s looking to be a good future asset for us as he continues to learn and develop himself.
