Manager Ian Holloway was full of credit for the team, especially the defence, given the changes he made following our draw with Derby County.
Speaking to the official site following the game the manager explained.
‘That’s the first time that back four has played together apart from an hour in training on Friday. I thought Webster was excellent, I took him off at Reading because we were 2-0 down and had to change things but he took that like a man and it hasn’t impacted his confidence. What we saw from him is the reason I signed him in the summer. We’ve got a long way to go but we are getting better and I was delighted with the defence.’
Holloway goes on to say that he was looking forward to seeing the stat compilation from the match because having tried to put some ‘fresh energy’ into the starting line up he wanted to see what the possession stats and our chance creation was like, because at least as he remembered the game he felt we had a number of good opportunities to have opened the scoring ourselves and possibly picked up the win as well.
‘Sometimes we have them the ball a little bit too easily, especially playing it out from the back, but we grew into the game as it went on. We dug in and did pretty much everything apart from find that winning goal, and there were enough chances for us to do that.’
Making the changes that he did, in the TV interviews Holloway was also honest enough to admit that had it gone wrong on the day he would’ve certainly opened himself up for criticism, but for him sometimes you need to do something that is very risky in an effort to change a pattern of results and obviously September wasn’t good enough results wise, but we have now given ourselves something to build on as we head into the international break.
