Ian Holloway has made his first appointments as Millwall gaffer. Marc Bircham rejoins the club as first team coach, and Des Bulpin completes the set up.

Bircham returns to The Den from QPR where he had been working in their Academy setup since being appointed as a coach back in the 2009-10 season.

It’ll be a fond reunion on two scores for the 35 year old having started his playing career at the club coming through our ranks and making his debut against Preston back in January 1997, aged only 18.

He left us in 2002 having made 121 appearances for us, and went on to QPR before ending his playing days at Yeovil.

He also played under Holloway during their spells at QPR.

62 year old Bulpin is much travelled and has an eye for young talent. He has spent time abroad and has international coaching experience, and has previously worked with Holloway at QPR, Plymouth, Leicester and his last club Palace, where he left the role as U18 manager.

Speaking to the official site Bircham said of his return that there were only two reasons he would have left QPR because he loved his job at the club, and one reason was to return to Millwall and the other reason would be to work with Holloway again, so when it approached it was a no brainer.

‘This is a tremendous opportunity for me and a very exciting time for the club. There’s a lot of hard work to be done, but Ollie’s a great manager and I just couldn’t turn down the chance.’

Bircham is also delighted to be teaming up with Neil Harris again, who has now reverted to his original role as U21 coach following his spell as caretaker manager, as both remain good friends and he feels all of the coaching staff now can learn a lot from Holloway and Bulpin, develop themselves and help each other out by bouncing things around.

Welcome to the club both.

Unless Ian plans to add anyone else to the backroom, it will now be strictly assessing the team and considering player options now.
