Archer hard to turn a McCourt effort from 25-yards onto the crossbar to maintain that lead before he was then sent off for a second yellow card with Millwall making the most of that extra man when Butcher made it two on the hour.
Richards pulled one back for Northampton 10-minutes from time but Morison made sure of a win for Millwall to end the four-match losing run in the last minute.
