At Sunday’s EFL Awards ceremony in London, Millwall saw themselves named Nickelodeon’s Family Club of the Year winner for 2017.
With an overhaul of the club’s strategy when it came to attracting younger fans and families to The Den back in 2013 when the Zampa Family Stand was opening in The Dockers Upper, kitted out with games consoles, confectionry stalls a mock dug out and face painting and competitions and the like, the clubs’ efforts on that score saw them pick up the award for the first time in our history.
Blackburn Rovers took the Championship award, Millwall the League One and Stevenage the League Two award, but we came out with the overall Family Club gong a well in light of our efforts.
Chief Executive Steve Kavanagh collected the award on behalf of the club alongside marketing manager Samantha Catchpole and jumior supporter and partnerships co-ordinator Nena Gibson, and speaking to the official site he explained.
‘It is a fantastic achievement to win this award and everyone associated with Millwall should be very proud. When I first arrived at this club it was very quickly apparent just how much thought and hard work went into fan engagement and making the matchday experience as good as it could possibly be for young supporters and their families. This club perhaps has to work harder than any other and it’s very pleasing for Millwall to have been recognised with what is a very distinguished award.’
He added.
‘I’d like to take this opportunity to thank and pay tribute to all members of staff who have contributed along the way and of course to the supporters, without whom this isn’t possible. But it’s important that the club doesn’t rest on its laurels. This should provide a platform for even bigger and better things for years to come.’
