Millwall have announced that Prostate Cancer UK will be our shirt sponsors for the coming season.
After turning down a payday lending company for the shirt sponsorship option, Millwall have decided to carry the name of the charity for free to help raise awareness.
It’s a battle close to Millwall’s heart with both Director Trevor Keyse and the now returned legend Neil Harris, having fought their own battles with male cancers and Millwall as a club have already helped raise upwards of £70,000 following an appeal set up by Harris, as well as fundraising help for other cancer charities, such as breast cancer.
CEO Andy Ambler said of the decision to forego the normal commerical windfall that comes from shirt sponsoring.
‘A motto that we have adopted at our club is ‘Football is the answer, not the problem.’ There is so much we can do, and can do more of, which enables Millwall to be a force for good. We are a family club, and like every family we know many close to us who have suffered the effects of cancer.’
Ambler adds that the hope is that by wearing the name on our shirts, and providing information in publications around the ground, as well as schemes which will see professionals available during match days for questions and advice, that lives will be saved by encouraging people to seek early treatment and early disagnosis.
‘If (it) helps saves lives, we will have achieved something even greater than three points on a Saturday afternoon.’
Mark Bishop of the charity added.
‘Football is vital to us as a charity because it reaches thousands of men unreachable by conventional health messages. We’re really proud of what we and Millwall may achieve for men of all backgrounds in the season ahead.’
