Millwall caretaker boss Willie Donachie hailed Ben May after the striker returned to action ahead of schedule.

May scored just two minutes into his comeback against Bournemouth on Tuesday and his return could be crucial to Millwall’s hopes of avoiding relegation.

With Danny Haynes back at Ipswich after his loan spell and Darren Byfield yet to reach full fitness, May’s fitness is a major boost for Donachie.

He said: ‘It was a great ball in for Ben’s goal and he did really well with the header.

‘I’m really pleased for him because he’s worked hard and he’s an honest lad.

‘Ben’s actually a week ahead of schedule but he wanted to play tonight, he knows his body better than anyone, and he’ll be involved on Friday against Tranmere.

‘He still has a bit to do in terms of fitness but he’s on the way.’
