Striker John Marquis has said he’s returning to Millwall in good spirits following his latest loan spell which has seen him help Northampton to League Two survival.

The 21 year old added to his Football League experience, by joining Northampton back in February before then returning in March, and in total he made 14 appearances scoring twice.

Having now returned to The Den, Marquis told the official site that he feels he has returned a better player following this spell out and now he’s hoping to stake his claim in Ian Holloway’s side for 2014-15.

‘It was a really good experience for me, to go out to a club and help them to fight off relegation was probably better for me than to play for a team with little left to target.’

Marquis says that Northampton were in the bottom two for most of the season so to escape effectively on the last day was a huge achievement and he’s delighted and proud that he was able to play his part in that.

‘My goal on the final day got the ball rolling in terms of the comeback, and all in all, it was a great experience.’

Having signed a new 12 month contract only a few weeks after Holloway joined the club, he also spent loan spells with Portsmouth and Torquay, because the manager wanted him to get games under his belt and he pleased to not only see Holloway want to see him progress ready for a proper shot at this club, but be so active to get him our for experience and games.

‘I was delighted that the manager gave me the extension because it means he has seen something he likes. He wanted me to go away and get more experience which I’ve done.’

Marquis says that following every game somebody from Millwall has been in touch to see how he’s got on, to assess his performance briefly and so on and the gaffer has been involved in that, along with Neil Harris or Des Bulpin so even though he’s been away from the club he still very much feels part of it.

‘I can’t wait for pre season to start so I can try and impress and hopefully force my way into the first team for next season.’
