Manager Ian Holloway has said it doesn’t matter what other teams do, and for example Charlton’s games in hand mean nothing, because all that counts is what our lads do on the pitch.
Given our position in 21st place and with the full knowledge that Charlton below us have three games in hand – Barnsley and Yeovil have two – Holloway repeats that it really doesn’t matter because our only aim between now and the end of the campaign is to ensure we have more points than three other teams and with how close the table is at the bottom, those three teams can be made up of opposition above or below us.
He really doesn’t care what their names are.
Speaking to London 24 the gaffer explained.
‘I don’t care about anybody else, we’ve got to be better than three. It’s going to be tough, it was going to be tough because of the amount of games we’ve won already this season but I know there’s enough games left for us to get enough points providing we start working and functioning as a unit and I think we are.’
Two draws in recent games have given rise to thoughts that we should’ve got more than two points from those encounters, but it brought an end to the losses and is at least something to build on from this point, and of course those points could be very valuable come the end of the season.
As Holloway has said following games since he took over, he has been bouyed by the fact that performances have seen a bit of an upturn and team spirit and determination has definitely been coming to the fore more, but that’s not to say we still haven’t got a hell of a way to go in eradicating errors at the back of the pitch, and then making the most of our chances at the opposite end.
It’s an old football cliche, but you’d think to think we are building towards giving somebody a real hammering in a game and dominating and winning by three or more goals, and if that point can come, the confidence boost could well see us really turn the corner and get on a run of successive victories but the problem is you look at the fixture list and you just can’t predict when that might happen, even if it was to happen.
March and April are a good run of close fixtures, so we need some momentum…even remaining unbeaten with a smattering of wins would do us the world of good, but we’ve got some big games in the coming months.
