New manager Ian Holloway took charge of the lads for the first time in the loss to Huddersfield, and he’s admitted that he felt the boys were desperately unlucky not to have come away with something from the match.
Speaking to the official site following the game at the John Smith’s Stadium which we narrowly lost one nil with a goals in the dying seconds of the game from Nahki Wells, Holloway was adamant that the score line wasn’t a fair reflection of the game in his eyes.
‘We’re bitterly disappointed because I think we deserved at least a point. I asked the players before the game to give everything and they did just that. The work rate was incredible. I feel for the players because they were on the floor in the dressing room. It was as good as Iv’e seen them on any DVD so far.’
Holloway does say though that the players will have to get used to feeling like that after games, because that kind of effort and determination and commitment ‘is the bare minimum I want from them,’ so he was very encouraged by their response and what he saw in terms of what he can move forward with in the second half of the season.
The gaffer also confirmed that the team will be playing a full friendly amongst themselves on Tuesday so he can have another opportunity to see them in a game environment as he assesses his first team options, and potential areas he may try and strengthen during the transfer window, but again he knows we have a talented group at the club and giving them an opportunity to impress him first is his priority, with a close second being that he wants to organise the coaching staffing levels properly.
‘I need some help, that’s the first thing. I can’t go out and sign players until there is a structure in place. That’s key, with a good structure you can begin to build. From Monday I’ll begin to put in place my training methods. I want more intensity, and I want my enthusiasm to rub off on the players.’
Adding that as he is naturally full of pride and passion, the players have to embrace that because he knows he has a massive job on his hands, so the sooner he can get going on that the better.
