Manager Ian Holloway has said that Millwall remain a work in progress as we head into today’s game against Bolton Wanderers at The Den later this afternoon.
Whilst the plan continues and he looks for further improvement in our play, Holloway did explain to the official site again that he still couldn’t be more pleased with the reaction the group have shown to him since he joined, and the efforts they are putting in during games and training to help us turn our form around, so whilst the aim today is obviously a win and three points, he also wants to see further improvement and see us cutting out the errors he felt we made against Yeovil.
‘Previously we have looked mentally tired when we have gone a goal down, but at Yeovil we showed good character to come back and get our equaliser. We are still very much a work in progress, we are working on a long term pattern and strategy where everyone knows what they are doing and sticks to the game plan throughout the 90 minutes.’
Clearly in Holloway’s eyes we aren’t yet doing that for 90 minutes and that will prove to be one of the big improvements he is looking for. He continues to say that his ultimate vision for us is to be a team that passes and moves and attacks fluidly and with intent, and as he’s already been questioned for the number of attacking players we used against Yeovil, roughly it seems reading between the lines he may overload us in attack to give us options and the belief and mentality that we are a team who goes forward quickly, but one which also needs to learn to defend properly when we don’t have the ball – irrespective of whether you call yourself a striker, midfielder or defender.
Sounds like he’s looking for the players to show a commitment and determination on the pitch in areas that aren’t necessarily their normal jobs.
‘What really encourages me is the appetite the players are showing to learn and get better. There is still work to be done fitness wise for some of them, and they are having to do that in important games where vital points are at stake.’
Ahead of Bolton though, Holloway does hint he might shake things up again depending on how players recover and how fresh they appear to be prior to the game.
