Manager Ian Holloway has said he was immensely proud of the team for fighting back from behind against Queens Park Rangers, but he also had to admit that it was a huge relief when Scott Malone scored the leveller because of how important a point that has proven to have been.
Speaking to the official site following the score draw, the gaffer explained.
‘I thought my lads were absolutely fantastic from start to finish. First half in particular we should’ve gone in front, first with Maierhofer and then Woolford. I can’t ask for any more. The players have been superb over the last couple of months. They kept going and going and had unbelievable support from our fans. They were out of this world, what great fans we’ve got, I am so proud of them.’
The result obviously means that following on from other results, we go into the game against Bournemouth next week knowing that a victory will absolutely secure of Championship status for next season.
At full time though Holloway was less pleased with the award of QPR’s penalty.
‘I think handball should be deliberate and sometimes it might have hit his hand, was it in the box, was it deliberate? Not one of the crowd jumped up. The only person who appealed was Kranjcar and he was outside the area. Anyway, I don’t want to talk about that. We showed tremendous character to come here and play how we did under the kind of pressure we are under.’
Holloway was obviously delighted to see us extend our unbeaten run to seven matches as well, and he should be reasonably confident now of us not only securing survival this season, but hopefully pushing on next season now he has his foundation and he really knows what individual players can do.
