Manager Ian Holloway was delighted to see Millwall progress through to the second round of the Capital One Cup last night after securing a one nil victory over Wycombe Wanderers.
Speaking of his ‘delight and relief’ at getting through to the next round, and remaining unbeaten still, the gaffer told the official site.
‘It was a fantastic game full of hustle and bustle. Credit to Wycombe, they’ve come a long way from last season and gave us an incredibly tough game. They made it very combative and were all over us at times. Thankfully David Forde has made a couple of absolutely brilliant saves to keep them out. It’s another successful day, and it was a different kind of game but we overcame the challenge.’
With Matt Briggs opening the second in his debut for the club, it did turn sour as he was sent from the field for a second bookable offence but Millwall held firm and made it two wins from two as we head into the third game of the new season.
As for the sending off, Briggs obviously received his first booking for removing his shirt when celebrating, Holloway added.
‘There was a lot of frustration and emotion coming out of Briggsy when he scored but he knows the rules and shouldn’t have done what he did. I’ve told him that and he’ll learn from it.’
Another debutant, Magaye Gueye also suffered bruising to his ribs in the game and had to be substituted early on in the second half.
Bobby Bacic explained that hopefully it was only bruising that was the issue but the player was having difficulty breathing at the time so he’ll be assessed properly ahead of our next game, and it’s just something rest will cure.
As for the other players injured, Justin Hoyte returned to training this week, and Richard Chaplow has also returned. Nicky Bailey has started doing outside rehab so he’s getting closer and Ed Upson is also in outdoor rehab.
