Manager Neil Harris has spoken about his summer recruitment drive and said that plans are progressing nicely as he looks to reshape the Millwall squad.

With Alan Dunne departing we are also on the search for a new skipper, and Harris told official site that our new skipper may in fact be a new signing given the overall youthful element to our remaining squad.

‘Things are progressing nicely. I’ve realised very quickly that things don’t happen overnight when it comes down to negotiating with players, agents and clubs. We have to be patient, especially at this time of year when a lot of people disappear on holiday, which is only natural.’

With contract extension negotiations ongoing with Jimmy Abdou and John Marquis, Harris went on to say that for new signings a lot of people rightly want to meet face to face for discussions rather than doing everything via the phone, and given that’s what he wants to do as well as he looks into the mentality of any new signings, it just means things will take a few weeks and you have to accept that.

‘We have identified players who we think are going to improve us and have certainly picked out key areas which we think need strengthening. Andrew Mills is working incredibly hard to target players who fit our demands, after which it is just a case of speaking to clubs and to the individuals themselves. We are making sure players are keen to come, which is the key for me. We want players here who are determined to have a right good go next season.’

As for the new skipper more specifically he went on to explain.

‘We have certainly got some good personnel left in the building. There are some good leaders with experience and some talented young players. But we’ve lost the captain of our side and we need to replace him. That certainly comes into the equation when we are looking at new players. I’m pretty sure that once pre-season starts – and all the boys are back fresh from their holidays – that we will see a new dynamic in the group and certain people will emerge as natural leaders. I’ll be keeping an eye on that.’
