Manager Neil Harris has been speaking of how important he feels the training camp out in Portugal will be for the players this season.
Out at the camp for a week, the gaffer described it as being ‘hugely important’ to our pre season plans as we aim to go one step further than last season in our quest for promotion back to the Championship.
Speaking to the official site having flown out last Thursday, Harris explained that the players would be getting three sessions a day to really bring on their fitness work and tactical understanding, and we will have our first friendly against a fellow English side whilst we are out there.
‘It is hugely important. The opportunity for us to go away somewhere with decent weather and good facilities is key and we’re thankful to the board. The players will be living together and we can monitor and get to know the players even more in that period of time as a group of staff. Three training sessions a day gives me a great opportunity to do some in-depth video analysis with them on our plans for the season and how we’re going to play. We’ll have a game against some English opposition while we’re out there behind-closed-doors so that will give the boys a good taster of being back out on the pitch. When we get back for the friendlies against Bromley, Dartford and Crawley we will hopefully be in good shape.’
Harris also spoke of how important the time away would be for the three new signings this summer, as it’s the perfect time for them to really settle in with their new colleagues and get to know everybody’s quirks, sense of humour and so on.
‘We’ve got a great group of lads and they make the new boys feel welcome. All three have already moved or are in the process of moving to the area so it will be good for families to meet and socialise. For the lads, going to Portugal will be a great time for them. They will have time 24/7 to spend with their team-mates and it is key at this stage of the season that the players bond.’
