Manager Neil Harris has admitted that we are making progress in terms of keeping Fred Onyedinma at Millwall on an extended contract.
Speaking to the official site Harris revealed that whilst conversations have been ongoing for a number of weeks, there were a few practical breakthroughs in last Friday’s talks that leave him pretty confident pen will reach the paper early next week on a new long term deal at The Den.
Speaking following the opening pre season draw with Dartford, Harris confirmed the reports that the Academy graduate was due to sign and explained.
‘It’s really good news for the club. Talks have gone on for longer than we would have hoped, but throughout the entire process, Fred has shown a real desire to be at this football club. He sees his long-term future at Millwall and we are confident that if he continues to work as hard as always has done, then he can continue to improve as a player and make a significant impact on the pitch for us.’
Reflecting on the friendly match itself with Ben Thompson scoring a second half leveller to end the game with a one all draw, Harris went on to say that he’s expecting improvement as the weeks pass as he felt our efforts in training had hampered our play.
‘The boys have had a very, very tough week of training and I think that showed at times. Our combination play wasn’t quite there across the park and it was a very typical opening pre-season friendly type of performance.’
He added.
‘Performances will get better as we keep working through pre-season and shaking off that rustiness. What is key at this stage is that we get through each hurdle without any injuries and it looks like that has been the case today, so overall I’m pleased.’
