Manager Neil Harris has spoken of his delight at the overall performance put in by Millwall in last night’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy victory over Southend United.

Having ended his playing career at Roots Hall it was a good return for the gaffer, especially as goals from Steve Morison and Shaun Williams put us through to the Area Final where we’ll now meet Oxford United.

Speaking to the official site in his post game press conference, Harris admitted we started slowly in the game, but he felt we grew into it nicely.

‘I questioned the players publicly for the first on Saturday and asked for a response from them. What we all saw here tonight was exactly that. They started the game as we knew they would – full of energy with plenty of movement going forward. But we defended that spell of the game well and once we got the first goal, which was a terrific finish from Steve, we really grew into it and took more control.’

Harris went on to say.

‘On the whole I think we deserved to win it. They were two quality goals we scored and we are delighted that so many of our fans travelled here to watch what was a really good display. I have to thank them once again because their support throughout was terrific. Our hold up play and the way we linked things together was especially impressive so I have to praise the front four for their work. But it was a really good team performance and I’m pleased for them that we have made it through to the Area Final.’

Back to a League One focus until the New Year and the first leg.
