Your favourite decade following wall

80’s by a long way.

To be honest the 90’s seem to have passed me by, more into the rave scene and being out of the country for a few years.

The 2000’s were great what with an fa cup final, Europe and Mother’s Day massacre, but the 80’s were much more fun especially away days in the cup and div 1.

The 10’s with trips to Wembley, play off wins don’t give me the same fuzzy feelings that the 80’s do.

I was lucky enough to have the time and the money to go between 81 and 89 but most of my games were between 84 and 89. Also to be 18 at the start of it - perfect.
Going for a pre match pint at the Crown, walking to the ground, the smell of the burger man (and his food), sometimes getting a program or a fanzine, walking through the turnstiles, up and around to the halfway line, seeing familiar faces, hearing the shitty speakers blare out 'Shoeshine boy' and Let 'em come. Watching the limited number of away fans.
Memories of Villa, Leeds, Southampton, Arsenal, Chelsea aways. The promation season celebration at the Den, seeing the opposition crumble at the abuse they got.
Not knowing 99.9% of the crowd but knowing that you were one of them and when push came to shove - they were there.

1976 to 1986, the Cardiff’s,Sheffield Wednesday’s and Pompey days of the mid 70’s then the big ones of Chelsea 76/77, Spurs77/78, West Ham 78/79. The early 80’s with the elephant meets and the cat & mouse roulette games on the Saturday morning London Underground trips with the other mob who were always away the same time as us.
84/85 Bristol city/ Luton etc, the meet up Covent Garden ( Nags head ) after the 0-2 home defeat v brum ( how the fuck did 200 Millwall get to CG without any police intervention? ) 88 Highbury, West Ham simod cup, and of course a year later or so promotion !!…. Now all we’ve got is Sebastian and chums from Bruges and Claude and Pierre from Lyon getting down there, I miss the Millwall of old .

Took my first proper hiding at that one mate. Highbury corner after the game when a certain chap walked us Into an ambush where we was well outnumbered but I stood and took my medicine. Great day from the meet at the Charlie Chaplain onwards.
But they regretted turning right into the old Kent Road 4 or so years later, Rising Sun pub ? Worked with one of their lot who said they got completely blitzed that day, full of bravado thinking it’d be another “Plaistow Liberties” shindig but come undone big time .

That was the pub mate. We ( Peckham lot ) came across from where we was waiting at the Carlton. They got properly weighed in but Denton never admitted it. My lot caught quite a few of them by the Canterbury and served them. Few got our collars felt. Meat wagon taking us back to Kennington stopped at the Elephant. OB open the back door, told us to fuck off and screeched off towards Waterloo. Touch and a half 😁😁

1979-1989 by far the best period for me.
So many great memories from Chesterfield away when we stayed up and out of the old 4th, winning the Football trophy or whatever it was called then at Lincoln city 3-2 on a rainy Wednesday night, WBA away when we got beat 5-1, Chelsea home and away in the League and FA Cup 1985, Leicester at home where 17,000 at The Den seemed like 170,000, that night in Luton, Bournemouth away with Hurlocks goal and Brian Hornes penalty save, Hull City away when we clinched promotion.
Playing in the top flight in 1988/9
Amazing memories that will stay with me forever.
