Even if you weren't a racing fan, Derby Day used to be one of the big events in the sporting calendar when I was a kid/teenager.

I wasn't even aware that it was on yesterday; no mention of it on the main BBC Sport page. Did it get much coverage elsewhere in the media?
I seem to remember we got taken twice as kids, growing up in New Cross.
Looking back it does seem strange, as my dad never ever placed a bet normally.
Even at the Derby, all he ever did was a bob each way.
I remember one year it absolutely pissed down, and we were stuck in a marquee all day.

If it weren't for this thread I would not have known it was on.
Since Lester and that Italian bloke finished who can even name a single jockey?

Since moving to a Saturday, I know it's been a while , but has lost it's magic for me.
