Team v Argyle

This is a crunch game and the time for talk is over. Now it is time for action. There has been too much talk about the fact that we have been playing well and we should be top four on our performances. I do not disagree that we are playing more attractive and exciting football and Saturday’s game was a case in point. We played well and should have been out of sight by the middle of the second half. The bad news was that we were not in front, conceded a sloppy gaol and then got a slice of luck to equalise near the death. Two wins out of ten tells its own story and things have got to change and we can start tomorrow with the game against Plymouth. The have only one point on their travels, got mullered by Cardiff last time out and should be there for the taking. The big question is whether we have got the know how to beat them with room to spare. It all depends on the team selection, the tactics and the motivation to put them away.
The keeper is solid and improving but could have done more to keep out their sloppy goal. When that ball came to the far post then he would have pushed everybody out of the way and punched it to the half way line. He dithered along with others and it finds its way into the back of our net. Leonard was as good as he has been all season and is nailed on. I thought Tango was OK on Saturday and should start alongside Cooper. Joe will fill in on the left and give us more attacking options down the left. Sav and Casper are nailed on and I thought it was a tactical substitution on Saturday to give them a breather for tomorrow. The first big question is whether Watmore has recovered sufficiently to start or does Azeez take his place. Esse should start on the right or maybe even as a ten. Honeyman is busy but is he a threat? Tempting to think that the Serb will start ahead of Langstaff but I doubt it and I also doubt whether NH will riisk our only two fit strikers and start them together. And surely we must have practiced free kicks and corners since Saturday as our efforts were woeful.

My thoughts are,

Jensen
Leonard Tango Cooper Joe
Sav Casper
Watmore Esse Azeez
Langstaff

Subs Roberts Danny Murray Wes Wintle Kelly Honeyman Serb Emakhu

Think we should make room in the starting 11 for Ivanho with Lstaff. Bench azee.
Thay way emaku can get some minutes in the second half, with azee and winter.

What I' d play v what Harris will do:

Jensen
Leonard Tanganga Cooper Danny
De Norre Wintle
Esse Langstaff Watmore
Ivanovic

Jensen
Leonard Tanganga Cooper Bryan
Sav Wintle
Esse Honeyman Watmore
Ivanovic

Could someone explain to me why Honeyman has consistently been picked as the second closest player to the opposition goal - thereby by definition our second best chance of scoring - when he has 1 goal in 77 appearances for us? I know he works hard and I know there is a tactical argument that he stops their deepest midfielder dictating the play and can press etc, but football can sometimes be very simple. Put players that can score or create goals as high up the pitch as you can. It's not rocket science.

Think closing down defenders is his forte, worked early in the season, oppo managers have wised up since. Still start him though, does draw plenty of fouls

Defends from the front and adds that bit of aggression. Probably played there for tactical reasons alone, eg He isn't really a striker so perhaps it's the coaches idea in the setup to disrupt one of the centre backs by drawing him out of position as he drops, allowing the Striker to have a little more freedom? This is my idea of the situation. Harris has taken off Honeyman and put Wintle on in the same position a few games ago, so there's something in that they clearly see.

Although I mostly agree with you selection suggestion, in my opinion, I think Danny defends better than Joe. But Joe seems to be better at moving forward and gives us better attacking options.

One thing we can all agree with on MO. We don't all agree on Danny or Joe for selection.
:grinning:

Not going to happen but I'd personally go with 4 4 2:

Jensen
McNamara Leonard Tanganga Bryan
Esse De Norre Honeyman Watmore
Ivanovic Langstaff

Roberts, Cooper, Harding, Wintle, Saville, Azeez, Mayor, Emakhu, Kelly

My choice would be

Roberts (Jensen too many costly errors)
Leonard Tango Cooper Danny Mac
De Norre, Saville
Esse Honeyman Watmore
Langstaff

But, make changes earlier if not in front by 55/60 minutes. Don't leave it until 70/75 minutes

I see your point but my argument is that you have to have a player in that position that can hurt the opposition the other way. I'd play Langstaff there as he has the same energy as Honeyman but is a far better attacking option. Or Esse. Playing Esse there frees him up from any wide midfield defensive duty and if we can get the ball to him in that position he can dribble and go both left and right, he can spot a killer pass and has a goal threat. Honeyman could take his place wide right.

I agree with many of your posts..
I hope Harris doesn't do that, Saville should be benched out of the 2. Think he was poor on Saturday, just doesn't have the legs for 90 full on minutes anymore...

I'm just speculating. He always play Saville and Honeyman. I agree with you. Wintle is a very decent player and he must be wondering when he is going to get a chance. I think we need to change some things up to change our fortune.

Jensen

Leonard Tanga Coops Danny

Honeyman DeNorre Saville Watmore

Esse
Langstaff

If its not working change on 60 minutes to 442 with the Big Serb on for one of the midfielders or Esse.

Two up front and Danny over Bryan for me. Could be a flat atmosphere and Danny can bring that extra spark and bite to gee the team up. He's also ideal for what could be a physical scrap.
He’s also a better player than Bryan IMO. For all this talk of Bryan’s attacking qualities, he’s achieved the best part of f*ck all so far this season.

Hoping NH will be bold, this lot have just been thumped by Cardiff and confidence will be low need to get at them early.

4-4-2

Jensen
Leonard Tanganga Coops Bryan
Esee Casper Savs Watmore
Langstaff Ivanovic
