Palace sniffing around Esse.

Completely unfounded rumours abound that his agent only agreed to the contract extension if there was a release clause included. That is probably bollocks, but agents these days are so nefarious I wouldn't put anything past them.

He is worth £15-£20m in my opinion, which is nothing to a Premier League team and when you consider that the sky is the limit in terms of potential, then we should include all sorts of lucrative add-ons if such a deal ever materialises. Personally speaking, if I were in charge then I would tell Palace that I dislike them immensely as a club and if they really want him then they need to pay through the nose.
I don't suppose we can't know one way or another if that's correct, we'll just have to wait and see. However, I get the feeling that we got him to sign a long term contract just in time because he has really stepped up as a player even since the start of this season. Whatever interest there was in Essa last season, I'd say that it's increased alot since this year's league kick off.

If he keeps performing for us, scoring and assisting goals, every club will want him. At that point, it becomes a bidding war and we can effectively name our price. Come January, all being well, £30m plus add ons will seem like a snip to the big clubs.

They get it right once in a while but in general, not from what I've seen. Let's hope they continue deals like Flemmings!
Fair point but i think when Rowett was here our recruitment policy changed for the better. Our whole ethos changed albeit incrementally. Younger players with much potential and sell on value.

Emakhu and Flemming types are exactly what we need to be signing up. Obviously the catch is that all the power is with the player. If they run their contract down we lose out so we just need to find the right time to sell.

I don't think JB junior will be chucking in the same amount as his dad did without seeing a return on his investment. Which is right in my opinion, we just have to keep unearthing a Flemming type player(s) once a season.

Brentford and Brighton play the money ball game very well although it means having a few full time overseas scouts to do the digging. We have one now. It can be done. Find- nurture, sell, rinse and repeat. It's the only chance we have of being competitive because we can't afford the fee's that our rivals can pay. We pay decent wages but transfer fee's a different matter.

FFP amongst other things dictates what we can and can't spend. Middlesboro spent the equivalent of our entire transfer budget on a centre half a season or so ago :shake:

Players will come if we give them the platform and the promise of letting them go onto bigger and better things if they produce and attract suitors. Signing 30 year old journeymen is no longer a viable option. Just have to keep unearthing or producing the potential.

Have you listened to the Steve Gallen interview P? This is pretty much our approach going forward. 👍

They don't chuck it away to easily mate. Esse is inexperienced and if he wants to go we'll have to take what's on the table. I'd be proper shocked if he went for more than £5/6 million when the time comes.

How long has he got on his contract? It might give a clue to what is possible, if it's a few years we have more options, if it's months then the Agent will turn the screw... he has potential but not experienced enough for the Prem yet which might put him in good stead to stay where he is and learn more but get the contract sorted sooner rather than later maybe?

29 Aug 2024 — Millwall Football Club is delighted to announce that Romain Esse has signed a long-term contract extension at The Den.

This is after he signed a long term contract in 2023, in order to get him to sign this I would imagine neither club or player expect him to be here for the next 5 years so both would of agreed on a price which is acceptable to the club and not restricting to the player.
