Match Thread Millwall V Reading KO 7-45

Afobe was decent when he arrived and guess what, we turn him to shit. Always the same and said it on here a fkin million times - it’s not a £10m striker we need - it’s a fkin attacking mentality that creates real chances. Messi would struggle to get to double figures under Rowett.

The classic game of 2 halves.

1st half started with us playing 4-4-2 and dominating the 1st 12 minutes but slowly they took control without threatening. We were allowing their back 3 all the time in the World to walk the ball out and their 2 players anchored to either flank exposed our mid-4 especially when Jed went walk about.

GR got his half-time changes spot-on. Bennett for Smith and Malone for Kief (who was walking a sending off tightrope) and he switched to 3-5-2. Suddenly there was a high press on their back 3 and their wide players were worried about Malone and Jed (who stuck to the right flank).

We dominated the 2nd half with Afobe slotting home after good work from Jed and Leonard and we saw the game out with ease.

Could have been more comfortable if Malone had longer studs and Jed a brain but one of our better halves of football in some while 👍

If only the forward players could build up an understanding by playing together regularly then maybe some of these chances might get stuck away.
What will saturday bring selection and formation wise. 🤔
3pts tonight 👊.
Too much chopping & changing is the issue mate. They dont get a chance to have some consistency.

Bradshaw & Bennett up top for me all day then Smith & Benik when changes are needed as Smith doesnt have the legs for 90 or even to start in my view. Hes an impact sub & a brilliant one at that.
Play to our strengths & we can win each game in this division esp at home.

Bennett and malone both made a difference after they came on, so have to give rowett a bit of credit for that.
we never have much composure or quality in the final third but in the second half we at least played at a higher tempo and forced them back.
We should always expect something like that kind of energy level and to be honest, without that we don’t have much chance because of our lack of quality on the ball, Jed aside and even he is a bit erratic.
Feel like we are a quality midfielder and a better striker away from being a playoff contender. But also more than capable of falling well off the pace with performances like Saturday.
Malone and Bennet deffo made a difference 2nd half, up the tempo they couldn’t handle it and to be fair should have been out of sight by the 70th min. Mitchell caught the eye especially breaking up anything they tried and agree a quality midfielder next to him with a natural goal scorer could prove the difference from a top half side to top six contenders.

Thought that was our best performance this season!

All the players were up for it, from the very first minute! They never stopped in that first half, the passing was better and the pace never slowed!

We must have had at least 3 or 4 decent chances to score, and when Afobe was free and blasted over, I wondered if it was going to be our day!

Into the 2nd half, and what I was impressed with, right from the off, was that the players confidence hadn’t dropped! They still wanted to get forward, and the midfield/forwards seemed as if all of them wanted to score!

Mitchell, Leonard, Bennett were all superb! Leonard especially, as he had a couple of good chances, and it was him who squared the ball for Afobe‘s goal! Jed was definitely up for it tonight, and he drove that midfield forward. Only blot on his copy book was not passing to Afobe, who was in a much better position to score and make it 2 - 0!

Reading tried hard in the last 10 minutes to get back into the game, and had a couple of chances to equalise, but Hutch was immense and played a captain’s role! 3 minutes of extra time followed, but every Wall player seemed determined that Reading were not going to equalise, and eventually we ran out winners!

Hopefully, this win will give the players and Rowett the confidence that we can kick on this season, and get another win at home, against Derby!

We’re currently 8th, level on 24 points with Blackpool (above us) and Luton who currently sit in the 6th place play off spot!

Well done, lads, you made us all proud tonight!

The Lions are roaring once again!
