A hard fought performance and a smash and grab winner at the death.
We started slowly and they had a lot of the ball. Their build up was ponderous but they posed little threat. It was 12 minutes gone before we fashioned a chance. A free kick from Sav found Wintle but his shot was wide. They continued to press but there was some good solid defensive work from Danny on the left keeping their wide man in check. Leonard was his usual solid self and there was a lot of focus and concentration from Tango and Cooper. Sav ran hard and Wintle got his foot in and slowly but slowly we began to get a foothold in the game. On 27 Esse found Langstaff in the box and his shot was good but the flag was up for offside. A few minutes later a free kick was taken by Jensen which was nodded off for a throw in. Leonard took it and it found Esse but his cross was headed over by Cooper. A couple of minutes later a free kick found Esse but his shot was blocked for a corner. They pressed forward but their build up was ponderous and the half finished goalless. We would have been the happier of the two sides as despite their possession the offered no real threat.
It took us a couple of minutes to get into our stride but we did take the ball to them and they did not have it all their own way. A lovely reverse ball from Esse found Honeyman who found Watmore but his effort was blocked for a corner. A poor shot from a free kick by Honeyman was preceded by a foul on Esse. We were starting to come into it more and an interception from Sav saw his shot blocked for a throw. It then went off for a corner which found Esse and then a corner which came to nothing. It was time for fresh legs and Casper Azeez and the Serb replaced Watmore Langstaff and Honeyman. Casper played as a ten and looked very busy. With 15 to go a cross found Azeez but his header was easily saved. Then came the save of the match from Jensen. A through ball found their attacker but Jensen saved at his feet and then saved the follow up. It kept us in the game. The game was petering out but the keeper made a poor error. His clearance was intercepted by Azeez at full stretch. He followed it up with a low cross which Casper got to first and slid it in nicely. The Millwall mob went nuts.
We took off Esse for Joe, played five at the back and saw the added time out without drama for a great win.
Jensen was solid and kept us in it late on with a double save. Leonard was a rock on the right and Danny was his normal feisty self on the left. Tango and Cooper were assured. Wintle was full of running and Sav covered every blade of grass. Esse was full of tricks and Watmore had his moments. Honeyman was very busy and Langstaff posed some threat. The Serb ran hard, Azeez showed some pace and skill and Casper took his goal really well. Joe bottled it up at the death.
So, our first away win this season, a clean sheet, three points and tenth as I write this. This was a turning point this season so hats off to the boys and NH. Upwards and onwards but…make no mistake Burnley will pose a different challenge next Sunday! Bring it on!
