Just Back v Oxford

A poor performance against a poor side who we should really have beaten.

It was an even start from both sides. We had a lot of good possession and some good pressing play. Esse looked lively on the right and Azeez looked even more lively on the left. Sav and Casper had the middle well controlled but we just couldn’t get the final pass right. Several times we broke down the flanks and hit some decent crosses into the box but their two giant centre halves were just booting them away. As hard as we pressed and the harder we tried the more we came up against a brick wall. Meanwhile they had other ideas. A free kick was floated into our box and their attacker got his header away and it went narrowly wide. A suicidal ball across the middle to Honeyman was intercepted and the rising shot was pushed away by Jensen to keep us in it. Then we got our first bit of luck and our first effort on goal from a corner on the left. It was floated to the far post and Tango came steaming in to force it home. We went off at the break with a smile on our faces.

The second half brought an immediate change with Tom on for Coburn who had taken a knock. He really struggled against the more giant of the CB’s and got very little joy. Hence the ball didn’t stick upfront and they came into it more. Their 8 became more influential and the 17 gave Leonard more of a tough time. Bit by bit they edged themselves more into the game but they never threatened seriously . We were just holding our own and then Hutch went down with a calf strain and on came Murray in his place. We looked a little more vulnerable and they turned the screw. Bryan was blocked off in the box and their attacker had a clear shot on goal which he converted. We tried in vain to find a way back. Azeez was replaced by Langstaff in the 89th minute but they didn’t give him a magic wand. A last minute corner won by Tom came to nothing and the game finished all a
square.

Jensen played OK with a couple of good stops but he could little to stop their goal. Leonard had a tougher second half and picked up his fifth yellow so he is out for Coventry. Hutch was solid and Joe got found out for their goal but Tango got MOM for a well taken goal and an almost flawless display in defence. Sav and Casper were busy and Azeez looked a threat at times. Esse had too many tricks and gave away possession in a dangerous position. George was busy and Coburn looked a handful in the first half. Tango also picked up his second yellow so he is also out for Coventry with five yellows so we will be defensively light with Hutch out and no Leonard or Tango. Tom was lightweight and surely the Serb would have been a more like for like substitution.
It was a ninth unbeaten game which came at a cost. I did see the O’Mara’s in the Hollywood Bowl and we were all hoping for a Millwall win but it wasn’t to be! We move on to Fat Frank and next Saturday where we really hope to get all three points!

I thought it was a rare dominant performance in first half, albeit the goal came from a set piece. Seriously, how often do you see us do that to teams away from home?
We all knew we’d sit back and try and hang on in the second half (why?) and eventually our luck would run out.
I’m disappointed because we should have wrapped things up in the first half

If we kept the tempo up second half and got a second goal we would have killed the game. Closing up and trying to sit on a one nil lead in a game we where completely in control of is frustrating to say the least. If you want to make the playoffs you need to be a bit more adventurous than that. Not sure what Langstaff did to be dropped for bradshaw. We are in a position to go for the play offs, so why not start going for wins, if it didnt work can always go back to a more defensive style. No reason in my eyes we shouldn't have gone for another goal.

We gave 2 points away and it seemed like we lost. As you said a very poor side which to be fair we dominated first half but fell into our bad ways second - again poor sub choices by Harris and a mistake to the send the smurf on instead of the serb( why did we buy him .) We had no threat in the air then and the ball was up alot poor choice to be honest , Esse tried too many tricks in the wrong areas and lost the ball putting the defence in trouble a d should have been subbed but a point is a point

And shouldn’t have capitulated in the 2nd🤷‍♂️

I’ve got nothing to add on the footballing side but God almighty what an absolute fucking shithole of an away day Oxford is. Fucking miles from anywhere, a pain to get to from the station and as for after the game forget it, you just end up waiting then walking aimlessly around for ages losing the will to live until you’re lucky enough to see a bus going to the city centre and then it takes forever to get there.

Driving is seemingly no better with queues of over an hour just to get out of the car park. Fingers crossed they get relegated and fuck off back to wherever they came from and never come back.

Agree with this, I’ve got stuck in that car park twice & wasn’t having it again so got there early & managed to park on the road somewhere

In fairness to Esse, as soon as he had the ball they put two players on him, at times they had three hound him in the middle.

Then.he needs to learn how to pass and MOVE.

But in that instance if he laid the ball off he would take 2/3 opponents out of the game and create space for his teammates 🤷‍♂️

For the life of me I couldn’t work out why Harris didn’t bring Emakhu on🤔.

With Oxford pressing if Emakhu had come on he could have roasted them on the break rather than relying on launch ball to Bradshaw.

I think the difference between the two halves was in the 1st half coburn make the defenders life hell and was holding the ball up and bringing other players into the game but in the 2nd half Bradshaw didn’t loved him in the past but think he should be behind the other 2 forwards now

I watched the post match and I was surprised that he said what he did. He talked of a dominant first half performance and I am not questioning our possession stats but it is about what we did with the ball. I ask one simple question. How many saves did their keeper have to make in the first 45? The answer is simple. None. How many shots did we have in the first half. Answer. One and we scored. Dominance is measured by shots, saves and goals.
I know that I am critical on here about people who think they know so much more than the gaffer. However, I cli clearly feel that we would have had a whole different game on out hands if NH had brought on Langstaff and the Serb in place of Coburn and Honeyman. We shall never know!
