Just Back v Fulham

A predictable result against a very slick, athletic and fluent side.

We started OK in the first couple of minutes but it was downhill from there. A long distant shot from Saville early doors but then they got into their stride. The quality of the movement and the touch was first class and it only took them three minutes to open the scoring. A good and lively run down the left left Dutch in their wake. Their winger made it to the byline, cut it back for Mitrovic who just side footed it past Bart for 1-0. We were reeling and found it very difficult to get anything meaningful going. It wasn’t long before it was 2-0. Some good movement in the middle with a driving run. Their attacker was on the shoulder of Murray, he turned quickly to pick up a through pass and smashed it past Bart for their second goal. We were running around with our tongues hanging out and it wasn’t until the twelfth minute that we finally strung a few passes together. We were definitely second best and they were moving forward with speed and precision and cutting us open at will. We were not helping ourselves. When we had the ball a sloppy pass or a poor forward movement gave them the ball back and we almost paid the price. Their overlapping winger moved into acres of space, hit a great shot which their lot thought had gone in but it actually went wide. Realistically it could have been four or five but it was only 2-0 at the break when the ref blew the whistle. Surely things needed to change as we were in for a pasting if we stayed in the same formation.

GR rightly took off Romeo, moved Leonard to RB, Murray to left back and brought on Smith so we played 4-4-2. It looked as if all that planning in the break would have been useless if Bart had not made a double save in the first minute of the second half. We had a little more control in the middle and looked a bit more of a threat going forward but they still cut us apart at will. There was some desperate defending with block tackles, good saves from Bart and some decent movement forward. But we rode our luck and came more into it as the game went on. They seemed a little complacent but we had the bit between our teeth and after bringing on Danny for Leonard and Evans for a tiring Dutch we went for it big time. Smith played his part with his aerial threat and we got a goal back when Smith headed the ball back across goal and it seemed to hit Benik and went into the goal. It was now a case of forget the football and bring on the Christians as we went for it big time. A cross found Smith but he tried too hard to place his header and it went wide. Benik had a shot which went straight at the keeper and then panic struck Fulham as they brought on Mawson the shore up the back, the keeper took every opportunity to waste time and got booked for his trouble. And it all else failed the ref came to their rescue. At times he was bizarre and at other times he really did look biased. However, they survived the onslaught even with an added four minutes to secure the win.

Bart had a decent game with three or four excellent saves but he could do little with the two he conceded. Mahlon was poor, full of running but little threat or composure. Murray was solid with only one blip at the back and Cooper was the proverbial parsons egg, good in parts. MOM by a country mile was Ballard. He never put a foot wrong, was up for the challenge for the whole ninety minutes. Molly was OK but did not have his best of games as he was penned back by their forward movement. Saville had his moments, Leonard was similar and Dutch made some crisp tackles but faded badly near the end. Jed was all over the place and I lost count of the times he gave the ball away coming out of defence. He thinks he can beat everyone but he simply can’t and he was frustrating in the extreme at times. Benik had some good movement and excellent work rate but was lucky with his goal. Smith was a decent target man, Danny was aggressive and solid and Evans had little time to do much except get himself booked.

There are times you just have to admit that you were beaten by a better side but they were on a different page from us. We had a spirited second half but we were truly chasing the game for 82 minutes. We won’t come across many similar sides this season.

Bart, Ballard, Dutch & Beni played well for us.
Not one of our players would get into the Fulham squad, maybe Ballard
They had pace and stamina throughout the team with ability to create chances
Still think if we had scored before 60 minutes the crowd could have given
us a big lift. Questions must be asked about Romeo starting ahead of Danny
As skilful as Conor is he lacks pace to take on defenders.
Beni and Jed are fast but they had 6 or so players who would leave them
standing

Their ability to attack at pace as well as overlap at will on both wings blew our confidence out of the water and did for Romeo in particular. Getting a goal back means we have something to build on for the game against Cardiff.. COYL.

Thanks, Silver.

You will forgive me, I hope, when I tell you that I spat out laughing my drink when I read:

"We started OK in the first couple of minutes...."

Christ, you can be cruel, Silver....

Just seen the goals.

Bart beaten twice at his near post. Sorry, but that is bloody shocking keeping.

Later made a smart save to his right. But what the hell was he doing flapping at the second attempt which he could simply have caught...?

Just doesn't inspire me at all.

First half was an absolute shit show. Second half not much better.
Bart - made a few point blank saves.
Romeo - Shockingly bad and should never have started.
Malone - Average by his standards
Cooper - Looks off the pace at the moment, maybe the injury affecting him
Murray - Not a great game, struggled with their pace.
Ballard - Did ok but needs to stop trying to hit 50 yard passes.
Jed - Sorry, but like against Portsmouth, he was awful. Gave away the ball in midfield probably 20 times.
Leonard - Probably edged mom for me, did well when he was switched to right back and at least showed some fight.
Keef - Got stuck in again but can't do it all on his own.
Saville - Pretty much anonymous...again
Afobe - Tries to make the runs and probably still needs some games, but jury still out on him
Second half we switched to 4-4-2 which was better but we are so slow at getting the ball forward. The difference in pace is frightening.
Smith - Did ok, nothing more
Danny Mac - Made a massive difference when he came on and showed the others how they should've been battling. Showed more fight in 10 minutes then most did in 90.
Evans - No real contribution.

Didn't expect much from tonight but that just shows that we need to beat teams like Blackburn at home. Won't get much at Cardiff then we'll have 2 points from 4 games and will be bang in trouble. Sorry but those talking about play offs are looking at the wrong end of the table in my opinion if GR sticks with this 5-3-2 at home. The first boos at GR rang out at half time and the pressure will only increase over the coming weeks. I'm calling end of October as time up for GR unless something drastically changes.

If we are going to win a game and create more than one chance per game then the front three has to be Jed Afobe Mahoney. None are perfect but they are the best and ONLY viable attacking options we have. We have nothing like any of them in reserve. We can play whatever you like behind them, a back five or four.

The back up to those three are Bradshaw, Bod and Smith. Smith cannot move, Bradshaw cannot score and neither can Bod. Smith is a sub you can throw on if you are chasing, the other two are not good enough. We are desperate for more attacking choices. We need pace and creativity.

A goalkeeper who can save shots at the near post would be useful, as well...

I know you have noticed his lack of agility too, Whisky.

Bart seems to have been given a pass from everyone tonight. Maybe the first goal was harder to stop but he got a hand to it. The second was close to him, nowhere near the corner and should have been saved. He has deteriorated as a shot stopper in the last 18 months in my eyes.

Thanks for the report Silver. Was impressed by our last 10 minutes of play. The determination to try for an equaliser was impressive, but we just couldn't get there.
Tonight has proven to me that Romeo should never start ahead of Danny, unless Mac is injured. It would be easy to critique our boys tonight, but I think it would be unfair, as the opposition were a different class. Fulham's display highlights our weaknesses , and our lack of creativity and pace. Something we really need to work hard on this season, to avoid any risks to our place in the Championship.
