Just Back v Argyle

A decent first half but the second half deteriorated as it went on but…..we won.

It was almost a disastrous start after their first attack in the first minute. Their attacker got a firm challenge, went down and the ref pointed to the spot. The attacker got up with a smile from ear to ear, got lots of plaudits from his team mates, their mob went nuts and then saw the flag up for offside. It was our turn to pour scorn on their celebrations but it was a close thing! Then we settled down. Azeez looked particularly lively on the left, tricky Esse looked similar on the right and the Serb was leaving no stone unturned up front. It looked exiting and we pressed hard when we had the ball. To be fair they had a lot more of the ball early on but they did not look a threat. They were a little arrogant and their left back got caught in possession on the wing. Esse had a couple of nibbles and won the ball. He pushed it inside the defence and Honeyman ran on to it and cut it back sharply to Esse fifteen yards out. He struck it low and hard and despite their keeper trying to get a hand on it and a defender on the line it beat them both and nestled into the back of the net. The Den went nuts and Esse had a big smile on his face. We were all thinking that this opening goal could open the flood gates but they had other ideas. Within a few minutes they had their best chance of the game. Their dangerous Whittaker hit a good floated cross from the right, their CF got between our two CB’s and his firm header was straight at Jensen who gathered it cleanly. A yard either side of him and it was 1-1. They pressed hard but despite them having more of the ball it was us that looked more dangerous. Azeez cut in from the left and hit a firm shot wide and a couple of minutes later had a good header saved by their keeper. Jensen made one blip of poor control in the box but recovered and was spared his blushes when the ref thought he had been fouled. We had our noses in front at the break.

Second half was a different story. Fat Wayne had pepped them up in the break and they came at us strongly. We had to stand firm and Leonard was exceptional on the right, Cooper and Tango were tight and Joe kept a tight rein on Whittaker. They were pouring forward but they never really threatened but it was taking its toll on us. There were tired bodies and tight muscles everywhere and Azeez was the first to be subbed with cramp by Wintle. That was followed by Kelly and Langstaff for Casper and the Serb. The situation got worse when Danny replaced Esse and we went to a back five. We really invited them on when they had really not threatened for the previous eighty minutes and they accepted our invitation with more pressure. At the death Jensen fumbled a corner and it was real heart in the mouth for the six added minutes. Fortunately they did not have the skills to take advantage and we ran out winners.

Jensen had a couple of blips but fortunately did not conceded. Leonard was a rock on the right and Cooper and Tango were solid. Joe played well and kept their Whittaker quiet. Sav ran his heart out and Casper looked assured but faded near the end. Esse was full of tricks and scored a great goal and got MOM from the club. Azeez had a much better game and looked the part at times. Honeyman ran his nuts off and fell in a heap at the end. The Serb looked good and made their defenders really work in the first half. He also laid of a couple or short passes in their box to set up chances and I was impressed by his skills. Wintle and Kelly ran hard. Langstaff had his moments and Danny was his usual feisty full back.
All in all a fair performance but a win, a clean sheet and three points which pushes us to 13th and some respectability. This was no classic but it puts us back on track. COYL.

Good report Silver.
I really thought the first half was as entertaining as it gets at our level & Plymouth more than played their part.
Harsh on Langstaff to miss out but you need competition. Harsh on Watmore as well but tonight was the night Azeez showed us what he is capable of & it turns out we’ve got a decent player. Honeyman was everywhere as usual & there’s no need for me to comment on Esse as everyone else will. I agree going five at the back only added to the late pressure but it’s another “modern trend” that I can’t get my head around.
P.s. I think it was Cooper who let their player get the free header in?

Neither OAG. He got between the two of them and the crosses superb. Perhaps Whittaker is worth a punt in the next window?

Jensen is a concern with balls coming into the box. The goalkeeper coaching team need to work on him trying to dominate the area. He seems timid and that uncertainty panics the defence. If he is going to come for the ball he has to do it with aggression and confidence. Anything other than that is pointless. He nearly cost us the win with a basic error. He can absolutely improve on this, it's not difficult to work on and he has to, because opposition teams will continually target this until he does.

That Bundu went down every time someone blew on him so fuck the cheating Cnut! 👊 The commentators even said it was a soft challenge which he made more of! Rooney grasping at straws!

Plymouth boss Wayne Rooney told PA Sport:

“We should have had a penalty. Again another decision which is against us.

“I asked the fourth official why the referee gave it and then changed his decision. He said Callum Wright passed it back into Mus (Bundu), who was offside.

“But it’s quite clear Callum didn’t pass it back. A Millwall player played it back into Mus. So it’s not offside. Again it’s these small decisions.

“The referees are always honest with us and the feedback we get, and we’ve had it the last few weeks now, is when they’ve made a mistake. I’m sure we’re going to get that feedback after this game.”

(On his team's performance) “I’ve said to the lads every attacking player who entered the field tonight wasn’t good enough.

“We didn’t create anywhere near enough today, we didn’t hold the ball up, we didn’t run in behind, so that’s disappointing”.

I thought when Esse went off we would see Emakhu and his pace tormenting them late on. Then when I saw Danny I thought he was going to left back and Joe would move up the left ahead of him….but no it was the dreaded back 5 🤦🏻‍♂️ that does not suit us at all, whoever plays in it.

We had them in our pockets until then and that last 15 mins was painful and had us sitting back and penned in with no outlet. I really thought Bomber had blown it and it would end 1-1 and the facebook Joe Edwards loving twats would be calling for his head but fortunately I was wrong and we held on and moved up to 6 points off the playoff spots😊.

I watched Bomber’s interview on Millwall TV and he explained he could not play 2 up front as many of us including me wanted as we only have 2 fit out and out strikers in the club. It was if he’d been reading social media. Well if he does, please Neil don’t play 5 at the back, see matches out with 5 in midfield and stop the opponents getting the ball in our box in the first place.

Esse was immense and would like to see him pulling the strings centrally in attack just behind the striker. If we can back this up with a decent result in Swansea we’ll be in good shape with only 1 unlucky loss in recent games. With injured players coming back I’m sure we’ll do well this season.

Marshall needs to do some serious work with Jensen.

Get him to put on a stone of muscle, attack crosses and get rid of that girly headband 🤦‍♂️

Like to see them jettison the pink kit. Keepers need to look imposing and intimidating to put the fear of god In opponents. Jensen is the exact opposite 😞

ThanksSilver, appreciated. Though UriaRennie had come out of retirement.

Game of two half. We dropped too deep with 15' to go which is inviting pressure and
Trouble. As to Jensen the least said the better.
If ever the “Harris out” brigade wanted justification look at the last 15 minutes. His substitutions and change of format almost cost us 2 points in a game we had bossed from the start 🤷‍♂️

I like to see it as we couldnt finish a game off for 75 minutes. Didn't create enough clear cut chances. Only time they looked like scoring was the frantic corner at the death

Blaming the attackers when he must f instructed his whole defence/keeper to pointlessly tip tap the ball around in their own half up until the very end.
I think we might have lost if they had just got the ball in our last third and tried to play from there.

I forgot to mention the great chance from Azeez in the second half. Tango hit a great diagonal over the top of the defence and Azeez ran on to it really well. He took it into the box, his last touch was bit heavy and he reached for it with his shot. The keeper smothered it, he had another poke at it but it squirmed away from goal and their defender slid it away. It deserved better than that and the pass from Tango was sublime.

A win's a win. Another solid performance. Like a number of other teams, they played some nice pretty football at times, but didn't create much. This happens so often that it can't simply be down to the opposition's limitations; we are a very well-organised, solid defensive unit (especially through the middle).

Having said that, I share others' concerns about Jensen. To date, I'm unimpressed. He drops more crosses than he catches, his distribution is poor and he doesn't appear to dominate his area or command the defence.

The amount of ball they had in their own half playing it from defender to defender then back again then to the midfielder to the defender etc must have accounted for a huge percentage of their possession stats. Utterly pointless.
