Just Back (Huddersfield)

Back to earth with a bump. Rowett kept faith with the starting eleven from last week and it seemed like we could keep our run going against the side occupying bottom place but as we know Millwall never work like that. We took the kick off and immediately played the ball back to Cooper who took a long hopeful punt which Huddersfield easily dealt with and promptly launched a counter attack with pace and that set the tone for the rest of the first half. We made our familiar cold start while they attacked at will, our midfield was getting out muscled while McNamara and Malone were given a torrid time down the wings.

It wasn’t long before they broke the deadlock with a long cross/shot which caught Long off his line. It was no more than Huddersfield deserved and instead of sparking us into life it only served to encourage Huddersfield to come at us more. Corner after corner followed and it seemed a matter of time before they increased their lead. Half time couldn’t come quick enough.

At the break we perhaps surprisingly made no changes and although we looked a bit more settled in the second half we still came nowhere near creating a decent chance. A triple substitution introduced Burey, Honeyman and Afobe and straight away finally we began to take the game to Huddersfield. Burey in particular was a focal point and while he willingly ran at their defence he couldn’t make that telling pass.

Our delivery into the box was a real problem today and when we did manage to get into decent areas our final ball was severely lacking in quality with McNamara the main culprit although he was not alone. Our only real effort came after some smart play between substitute Bennett and Honeyman with the latter chipping a decent ball to the back post where the onrushing Burey managed to poke the ball towards goal and although it looked like for a split second it was going to trickle in the Town keeper managed to scramble back in time.

Our quest for a equaliser wasn’t helped by the ref who constantly blew up in favour of the home team although we hardly helped ourselves by giving away some silly unnecessary fouls. As the time ticked away we became more desperate and played with an urgency that was sadly lacking for most of the game and even though there was eight minutes added time we just couldn’t break through and Huddersfield held on for a deserved win.

Nobody really covered themselves in glory today but I would give MoM to Mitchell purely for his hard work and endeavour, he really was trying to make something happen to no avail. On to another away game at Birmingham and Rowett again finds himself with selection headache. Does he give todays side a chance to make amends or will he ring the changes?

Excellent summary, IW.

Thanks!

Have to agree ,a typical millwall game against a lower based team , no one covered themselves with glory and a really under par team.performence, Marlone cannot defend ,the back 4 passing was dire & we had 57% pocession but most of it in our half passing it back & sidewards, the only time we looked like we might threaten was when the 2 B,s came on and they actually ran at their backline..got to improve before wednesday....they wanted it more then us today & we paid the price.
We mis s both hutch & wallace and we still need a General in midfield and a big target man if we are going to hoof it li!e today

Cheers IW
Watched the game from the comfort of my mountain retreat in Spain and thought that Huddersfield did a number on us and it looked like we didn't know how to break through their midfield, I hope they get relegated as I have seen so much time wasting since we played Reading at home.

MotM for was Long.

IW, Thanks for the report on such a shit performance, it must have been heartbreaking to have lost time and money on a nonshow by our team and respect to you and the others that made the effort.
Yesterday was the first nonshow of alternative TV and they could not have picked a better day.

Cheers for the just back. Ring the changes I would suggest
Long
Danny, Cresswell, Cooper, Styles,
Flemming, Billy, Saville
Vogl, Bennett, Burey
Would like to see Vogl have a go up top in a 2, not sure who with though.

So you drop Bradshaw cos he doesn't score this week....short memories

Jesus H Christ could play up front for us, he too could stand and watch the ball sail straight over his head and into the oppo keepers hands.

Not necessarily, as I said, not sure who would play up top with Vogl, because I would like to give him a go there. You could perm anyone from 3, Bradshaw, Bennett or Afobe. Bennett seems to offer a bit more when he comes on, maybe a start might be a plan. Have nothing against Bradshaw at all but on his own he looks lost IMHO, not his fault but the way we play, if we don't play 2 up front we are very limited.

Cheers mate.

It isn't the fact that we lost (everyone is capable of beating everyone in this league) but it's the manner of defeat. I would question Rowett's in-game management which is always reactive (and not always immediate) and not pro-active. If you're getting overrun, you make changes and if anything, retain the football and not lump it forward and give your opponents the ball back.

A good manager can change their teams fortunes through substitutions and tactical changes. Rowett just seems to keep the plan A and hope something gives and no I'm not advocating a change of manager.

using too much logic and common sense, that's your trouble! You'll be asking G.R. to pick an attacking side next. Don't think scoring first is in his game plan for away matches. Feel sorry for the fan's who spent good money to watch it.
they deserve better, much better.
