Ben Thompson

Football is a squad game and there are always going to be players on the periphery of the first choice eleven. The stick Rowett is getting over Thompson, Smith and Mahoney is the same generic criticisms that Harris had over players like Skalak, Tunnicliffe and Byron Webster.

Rowett hasn’t treated these players any differently than they would be by any other manager and in the case of Smith he has been treated in exemplary fashion by Rowett and the club, allowing him a free transfer so he can make a move that suits him and his family in recognition of Smiths superb professional attitude that he’s shown throughout his time at Millwall.

When it comes to Thompson there isn’t a Millwall fan out there that doesn’t want him to do well but football isn’t based on emotional ties to one club any more. Ben had a run of games last year and for whatever reason didn’t take the chance and from what we’ve all seen since it just isn’t happening for him. Comparing him to Kieftenbeld and Evans is apples and oranges, just because one isn’t good enough it doesn’t automatically make the other any better.

There’s always the chance that Ben could turn it around and every time he’s on the pitch we’ll back him 100% as he would never let us down as far as attitude goes but that can only take you so far. Good luck to him but regrettably he is better off trying to kick start his career somewhere else.

Ben had a few games and done nothing worse then the others on the pitch, GR at that time, still hadn't found his best 11 (still hasn't) the problem on the whole is not the players but GR
