It’s being reported in the press today that former England U21 and Premier League winger Matthew Etherington will spend a few weeks on trial with Millwall.

The 33 year old finds himself out of contract and apparently discussions have been ongoing with manager Ian Holloway for a while in terms of bringing him in and tentative discussions on whether a deal could be done at the end of that, and presumably the fact he has appeared at training is an indication that if both parties are happy we will have room in our budget for him.

Some outlets are suggesting a move would mean a significant pay cut for the player, but out of contract, if true, that just shows his desire to get back playing for me.

The winger has previously played for Peterborough, Tottenham Hotspur, Bradford City, West Ham and Stoke City and in his career so far he has well over 400 career starts across all competitions and just under 500 appearances all in.

In that time he has also scored 43 times.
