Carlos Edwards and Ben Thompson have been in front of Millwall’s media department discussing the League One Play Off Final against Barnsley at Wembley this weekend.
In readiness for the 3pm kick off on Sunday, Edwards was speaking to the official site about how he felt it was a ‘privilege’ to be playing at the national stadium for the club, with a real hope of returning to the Championship at the first time of asking on the cards.
At the tender age of 37, Edwards could become one of the oldest Wembley debutants having not played there previously, and it’s an opportunity he’s relishing.
‘It’s a privilege, and it just proves there’s a first time for everything. Mahlon Romeo came into the side and did very well, so it looked like I wouldn’t get back in after my injury. But he was unlucky with the sending-off at Gillingham which meant unfortunately he is suspended. I have picked up where I left off earlier in the season and am trying to play my part. We’re going there with a positive frame of mind and will continue what we’ve been doing in the last six games. Full credit to Barnsley, too, who have also been in great form, but if we play the way we can I’m confident we can come out on top.’
As for Young Player of the Year Thompson, it’s just the perfect way to cap off a fine season for him, but he knows the players have to focus on the game and not the occasion as losing is not how anybody wants to bring the curtain down on 2015/16.
‘Everyone’s excited, but you can’t let that get to you. It’s not a day out, there’s a job to be done. There’s a lot at stake for the club and everyone connected with Millwall. I’ve sorted all the family’s tickets and now I’m just focusing on the game. We know the threat Barnsley pose but we’ll go out and play our normal game and I’m confident we’ll be fine. Once the whistle goes all the build up and the occasion will be forgotten and the hard work and preparation we’ve done will see us through.’
