Manager Neil Harris has spoken of his delight at the defensive solidarity shown by Millwall in the weekend’s victory over Birmingham City.
Heading to St Andrew’s Stadium on Saturday for our latest Championship action, Millwall took a narrow one nil victory with second half substitute Fred Onyedinma finding the net in 77th minute of the game.
Birmingham may have more dominated possession on the day and they had greater attempts at goal overall, but they only managed to test Jordan Archer once, whereas we got six on target against David Stockdale so a third straight win away from home was more than justified.
Speaking to the official site as he met with the media following the full time whistle, a delighted Harris explained that he felt victory was more than justified given how we were the dominant side during the final 45 minutes.
Our unbeaten run now stands at six matches.
‘I said to the players at half-time that it’s not about coaching or tactics, it’s about them being more of a Millwall team in the second-half. Birmingham competed really well against us in the first-half, winning a lot of first and second balls and kept our front pair relatively quiet. In the second-half, I thought we were much better, much more like ourselves and dominated large periods of the game. We got our noses in front and then could have had two or three more after that. We defended really well as a unit today and got the goal that mattered. I’m really pleased with the clean sheet and three consecutive wins on the road from a team that couldn’t win away in the first half of the season – that’s not bad.’
Harris also rightly had praise for goalscorer Onyedinma as he bagged his second goal of the current campaign to earn us all three points on the day.
‘Fred is a sprinter – an athlete. He is very up and down in his performances because of his age and the way he plays, but when he comes off the bench with 20-25 minutes to go, that’s the impact I have to demand as a manager. He changed the outcome of the game. In front of their fans, Birmingham could have started to build momentum late on, but we took the game away from them.’
With Millwall failing to register a win on our travels in the entirety of the first half of the season, Harris said it was football as we certainly haven’t changed our approach on our travels and we now have three wins on the spin and long may that continue.
