Ian Holloway has booked the players up for a nice five day trip to Portugal next week.

Fans shouldn’t be too concerned though, they won’t have much time on the beach as he’s booked them into a training complex where not only does he expect the players to rapidly increase their fitness levels, he’ll also be drilling them in the way he wants them to play now that he’s in charge.

January 25th sees us with a blank weekend owing to our lack of involvement in the FA Cup, and whereas we were scheduled to meet Yeovil, they will be playing Southampton, so the break has come at the right time for Holloway to make the most of it as we look to turn our season around.

Assistant coach Marc Bircham explained.

‘The timing is perfect, this is going to be like a mini pre season because it gives us extra contact time to get across our philosophy so that they can understand us and we can understand them. With the weather and hours of daylight we will be able to get in more work, so it should be a really useful time together.’

One of the benefits of taking the players away as well will be that Holloway can spend a bit of one on one and group time with the players on a personal level so he can get to know their motivations and characters and really work on the spirit he wants to foster within the camp as well.

One thing is for sure, this won’t be a holiday for the players.
